Mark Mangino

Mark Mangino has lost 127 pounds and is coaching at Youngstown. He is an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. The good news is that he has lost 127 pounds. Good luck coach.

Will Compton led the Washington Redskins with five tackles last night. DeJon Gomes had four tackles. Roy Helu ran one time for 30 yards and a touchdown. In addition he had one pass reception for fourteen yards. Niles Paul had one catch for seven yards.

I think there are more Nebraskans in Major League Baseball than ever before. The former UNL players and the teams they play for are as follows:
Cody Asche-Philadelphia Phillies
Andrew Brown-New York Mets
Alex Gordon-Kansas City Royals
Joba Chamberlain-New York Yankees
Brian Duensing-Minnesota Twins
Dan Jennings-Miami Marlins
Tony Watson-Pittsburgh Pirates
Thad Weber-Toronto Blue Jays

Other Midlanders playing in MLB are:
Conor Gillaspie-Chicago White Sox
Darin Ruf-Philadelphia Phillies
Jake Diekman-Philadelphia Phillies

Story about Scott Strasburger!

Former Holdrege High School and NU football player is mentioned in the Omaha World-Herald.

http://www.omaha.com/article/20130817/NEWS/130819162

Defensive lineman Kevin Williams is out for the season with a knee injury. Williams was going to get some good playing time this year.

Tight end Jake Long will be ready for the first game.

Nate Gerry is working at linebacker for now. The incoming freshman is a tremendous talent and the coaches are finding a way to get him on the field.

Watch for Brodick Nickens to start in the defensive line this year. He's 6'5" and 310 lbs. Nickens is a walk on from Alliance, Nebraska.

NU gets firs 2014 BB recruit!

6'10" power forward Jacob Hammond pledged Monday to play basketball in 2014 for Nebraska. He had committed to Oklahoma but decommitted this spring. Hammond had an offer from Texas Tech and TCU, Tulsa, and Wichita State had shown interest. Nebraska has one more scholarship for 2014 and plans to use it on another big man.

The Kansas City Royals have moved into second place in the American League Central 6 1/2 games back from Detroit. They lead Cleveland by a 1/2 game.

Nebraska BB is after an Australian forward named Jonah Bolden. Nebraska has strong ties to Bolden due to Asst Coach Chris Harriman knowing his dad. Bolden is 6'8" and has impressed recruiting analysts. Louisville and LSU have shown interest along with many other schools. This would be huge for NU if they could land Jonah Bolden.

Sport Shorts!

Overton is preseason rated No. 5 in D-1 by Huskerland Prep. They are led by lineman JD Callahan and running back Hayden Cahoy.

Phil Bates caught one pass for six yards. He is a former Nebraska high school star who played out his career at Ohio via Iowa St.

Phillip Dillard had three tackles for San Diego.  Josh Brown kicked three FG's for the Giants.

Corey Cooper and Harvey Jackson lead the way at safety for NU football. BUT, look to Charles Jackson to work into a starter. Andrew Green has also moved to safety. I still like Nathan Gerry and Drake Martinez to play some this year. Nathan Gerry will be on the field somewhere.

QB Tommy Armstrong is back at practice.

JUCO transfer offensive tackle Matt Finnin will vie for a starting position this year.

TE Cethan Carter is opening eyes early this fall.

The Huskers have adopted a new motto RAC. Relentless, Accountable, Competitive.

Pelini says linebacker Jared Afalava is progressing nicely.

Max Pitman has moved from linebacker to tight end. Mitch McCann has moved from linebacker to fullback. Andrew Green has moved from cornerback to safety. Sam Fultz is now working only as a punter.

Defensive end Randy Gregory is turning heads with his pass rush in practice. This is no surprise as he is the best recruit we have this fall and we have some good ones.

Linebacker Zaire Anderson is playing well after his knee injury last year. Pencil him in as a starter.

Thad Randle has already locked up the defensive tackle position barring any relapse. Please stay healthy.

Sam Fultz will be our punter this fall.

They say Mauro Bondi and Pat Smith are even in the competition as our kicker. Look to Pat Smith to win the battle.

Jason Dufner won his first major today by winning the PGA Championship.

Defensive Tackle!

It has been said that the NU defense will be as good as our defensive tackles. So how good are they. Really we just don't know. We all would agree that we have lots of talent but are they ready to play Big 10 football.

Thad Randle is finally healthy. Let's hope he stays that way. He could be really good. I hear good things about Brodick Nickens who may be a starter this year. Keith Williams did play last year and did ok. Hopefully he has improved his strength, etc. Aaron Curry and Vincent Valentine must emerge this season. We have to have some good depth. It would be awesome if one of these two players would step up and start this season. The talent is there. Freshman Maliek Collins is a true freshman this year. It will be interesting to see if he elevates himself to be able to play this season or he ends up redshirting.

Arapahoe High School is rated No. 10 in D-1 by Huskerland Prep this season. Arapahoe is led by quarterback Caden Weverka, one of the best in eight man football.

Asst Coach Chris Harriman stays at NU!

Coach Harriman had two pitches by Purdue head coach Matt Painter recently but said no.  Great for Nebraska!  A great family man Harriman is known as one of the best international recruiters in college basketball!

Tommy Armstrong Jr. Will start the fall camp as the No.2 quarterback.  My guess is that Johnny Stanton will be redshirted this fall barring injuries. We have Abdullah and Imani Cross as the top two backs.  I think either Newby or Taylor will play a lot and the other will redshirt.

At receiver, we have Bell, Turner, and Enunwa! but I can't wait to see Jordon Westerkamp and Alonzo Moore!  If Tyler Wullenwaber is healthy is may be the fastest on the team!

We will look at other positions soon!
