Huskers Drop Season Opener, 4-3

The Highlanders jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third when they scored four unearned runs following a Husker error. The Huskers climbed back in the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but were never able to plate the tying run.

NU Women are playing right now in Lincoln. Love watching Nicea Eliely , a freshman out of Colorado Springs.

The men;s team needs Ed Morrow back!!! What a couple of sad losses to Ohio St. and Rutgers. Very discouraging!  NU is better than that but without Ed Morrow it struggles. The depth is not very deep!

I look to the Falcons winning by 10-14 points today over the Packers!  The Packers defense and now its offense is too injured!

Edwin Hadwin has now become the 2nd PGA golfer to shoot a 59 in the past 10 days. Entering the final round of this week's tournament Hadwin was in first place.

Bob Diaco is Nebraska's new defensive coordinator. He will install the 3-4 defense which is similar to the 5-2 defense that Devaney used. It will be very interesting to see how the personnel will be shifted to fit the new positions.

Golden State beat Orlando today 118-98. Stephan Curry had 27 and Kevin Durant had 15. Orlando was led by Elfrid Payton with 23 points.

The Nebraska basketball team was outscored 26-4 at the free throw line yesterday. They got beat by Michigan by six points 91-85. Nebraska now goes 3-2 in the Big 10.

There is no doubt that Nebraska needs Ed Morrow Jr. He is an offensive big man who can help the scoring but most of all hw knows how to rebound especially on the offensive side.

Northwestern and Michigan went 22-46 from the three point line. That's tough to compete with. Opposing teams are getting a lot of good looks from the three point line.

I like the Bob Diaco hire or least what I have read about him. I hope he can do some late recruiting for us on the defensive side.  It will be interesting to see how fast we adapt to the 3-4 defense.

Brandon Reilly made the Big Ten All-Bowl team! Congrats!

Nebraska has added five new players to the football roster! These are players that started classes at NU this semester.

One is Avery Roberts, a four star outside linebacker, who was named the Delaware Defensive Player of the Year. Roberts is possibly NU's best recruit this year.

Tristan Gebbia, a four star quarterback from Calabasas, California is also enrolled. He threw for 5,338 yards and 61 touchdowns with only 11 interceptions. He was the only QB to throw for over 5000 yards this year. He finished his career with 13,109 passing yards which is second most in California history. The all-time leader is Jake Browning, the QB at Washington.

Keyshawn Johnson Jr. is also at Nebraska. He is the son of Keyshawn Johnson, the All-Pro. Johnson was a four star receiver for Gebbia at Calabasas. He had 48 catches for 812 yards and 11 touchdowns this past year and when he was a junior he had 68 catches for 944 yards and six touchdowns. Actually Johnson will be a little late getting to Lincoln as he just had appendicitis.

Jaevon McQuitty is another four star receiver on campus. McQuitty injured his shoulder this fall but still had 39 catches for 854 yards and 12 touchdowns. He had 31 TD's during his high school career. McQuitty is from Columbus, Missouri.

The fifth player is an offensive tackle named Broc Bando. Cool name. He was from Lincoln but this past season he was the starting right tackle for the undefeated Bradenton Fla IMG Academy team.

These five players will provide help and depth at their positions. Some may make an immediate impact. This group has also been active in recruiting other players for the Huskers.

ESPN senior hoops writer Andy Katz says there is no reason Nebraska can't rise to a top team in the nation. He says just look at Wisconsin that was once a school that was just plain terrible at basketball.
Wisconsin has reached the NCAA Tournament each of the last 17 seasons. Twice they were in the Final Four.Katz says right now Wisconsin is the best in the Big 10 with Purdue Michigan State, and Indiana in the next tier. I might put Northwestern in that group too. Katz is high on Ed Morrow Jr. and says the sky is the limit for him.

Nebraska got a former five star basketball recruit Sunday by getting Isaac Copeland to be a Husker. He is 6'9" and weighs 220 lbs. Copeland was rated the No. 23 player in the nation by Rivals coming out of high school in 2014. Copeland can start playing for the Huskers in January of 2018. With Copeland, Nebraska has filled its allotment of 13 scholarships. Copeland was named to the Big East freshman team in 2014-15. He averaged 11.1 pts per game that year.

Nebraska basketball!

Nebraska plays Northwestern in Lincoln tomorrow! Northwestern has beat Texas by 19 points and was only beaten by Butler by two points. Northwestern is rated 44th in kenpom.com whereas Nebraska is rated 83rd. Northwestern is favored in this game but it should be very close with NU at home.

The Northwestern team is run by Bryant McIntosh, their point guard.

Nebraska may be without Isaiah Roby, our freshman guard, who has really helped NU as his time has increased. Roby was injured (back) in the Iowa game and is a game time decision.

Can Nebraska make it 4-0 with another upset? Can it? I say yes!!

Nebraska 67

NU football was 0-4 today in commitments at the All-Army Bowl. It was expected that NU would get one for sure and maybe two or three. No luck today!

Rex Burkhead is a free agent and there will be some teams that want him. He would fit the New England's style of offense. He would fit San Diego's style or maybe New Orleans's style too. It will be interesting to see where he goes.

Last Friday Ryker Fyfe was pressured on 17 of his 40 drop back passes. On those attempts, Fyfe was just 3-for-14 for 32 yards.

Nebraska basketball plays Iowa in Lincoln tomorrow night. Look NU to go 3-0 in the conference with a 78-73 win. Watch Iowa's Peter Jok!

land10.com just predicted the two deep roster for 2017.

They have starters on offense as:
Tanner Lee QB
Devine Ozigbo RB
Stanley Morgan Jr WR
Demornay Pierson-El WR
J D Spielman WR
Austin Allen TE
Nick Gates LT
Jerald Foster LG
Michael Decker C
Tanner Farmer RG
David Knevel RT

2nd team
Patrick O,Brien QB
Tre Bryant RB
Bryan Reimers WR
Kenyan Williams WR
Jaevon McQuitty or Keyshawn Johnson WR
Tyler Hoppes TE
Matt Farniok
Cole Conrad
John Raridon
Jalin Barnett

On the first team I am surprised with Austin Allen starting. That would be great if he can. What happened to Matt Snyder. I think Tyler Hoppes will get a lot of action.

Picking David Knevel over Cole Conrad was a surprise. I also won't be surprised if John Rarison starts at center. I will take Foster Sarell to start at right tackle if he signs with Nebraska.

If Nebraska can pick up Joseph Lewis the top receiver in the country he will play a lot!

Starting Defense
Freedom Akinmoladun DE
Sedrick King  DE
Mick Stoltenburg DT
Carlos Davis  DT
Chris Weber LB
Marcus Newby LB
Dedrick Young LB
Chris Jones CB
Josh Kalu CB
Kieron Williams S
Aaron Williams S

2nd team
Daishon Neal DE
Ben Stille DE
Khali Davis DT
Peyton Newell DT
Luke Gifford LB
Mohamed Barry LB
Avery Roberts LB
Boaz Joseph CB
Lamar Jackson CB
Antonio Reed S
Avery Anderson S

Alex Davis is pretty good at DE but doesn't make the list. AJ Natter can play some ball too. Tyrin Ferguson may get some LB time but this position is much deeper now. Two years ago Luke Gifford started and now two years later he is second team. He has improved also.

I could see Lamar Jackson starting at CB with Kalu nickel back. DiCaprio Bootle and Marquel Dismuke gives us a lot of depth at CB. Eric Lee has disappeared and we will see if he makes a move this year. Antonio Reed has started now but is listed No. 2 in this list. Avery Roberts, an incoming freshman, may be be our next Nathan Gerry by being a great hitter.

Of course injuries will play a factor in all of this and we seem to have more than our share of injuries.

The defense looks pretty strong for next year, Our offense is untested except for the offensive line mostly and the wide receiver position. They could be better though next year too.

NU Football recuitment

A key recruit for Nebraska is Joseph Lewis the number one wide receiver in Nebraska. He plans to announce on Signing Day in February. Lew is has visited Oregon and Nebraska. He is being recruited by Coach Keith Williams and signees Tristan Gebbia and Keyshawn Johnson Jr. He says Nebraska and USC are his leaders but he is considering Arizona State and Oregon. He will visit Arizona St on January 13th and USC on January 20th.

Also 6'6" 310 lb fove star Foster Sarell is rated by some as the No.1 offensive lineman. Sarell loves Nebraska's offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh and that is why NU is still in the hunt. Sarell is from Graham, Washington. Washington and Stanford are also in the hunt for Sarell.

Sarell can help NU right away. He is that good.

Cornerback Darnay Holmes, offensive tackle Chuck Filiaga and slot receiver Jamire Calvin are Nebraska targets that are also announcing Saturday.

Calvin, a 5'9" 175 speedster, is the most likely to commit to NU according to some of the recruiting services. He likes both Keith Williams and Donte Williams.

Tom Herman has hired former NU coach Tim Beck to run the offense in Texas.

Bellvue West recruit Jaylin Bradley has qualified academically and may get an offer from NU soon. He is a running back that set a lot of records this last season.

Sounds like he will go with Nebraska if he is offered by them.

In basketball recruiting, Keyshawn Embery from Midwest Oklahoma is considering Nebraska. He is a four star point guard who is averaging 33 points a game. Embery is rated 109th by Rivals. Embery has been on the campuses of Kansas St., Nebraska, Oklahoma St. and Arkansas.

Nebraska (8-6) utilized a 1-3-1 defense against Maryland (13-2)and the NU men won 67-65 on Sunday This game was at Maryland and with the win at Indiana earlier last week well this makes things much more fun. Tai Webster has hit double figures in 15 straight games. He scored the last seven points vs. Maryland. Glyn Watson had 17 points.

This is the first time since 1979-1980 that Nebraska has won its first two conference games of the year in away games. The last time Nebraska has won its two first conference games was in 1979-80 when Barry Collier was our coach. That year we went 7-9.

Nebraska plays Iowa this Thursday at 8 pm. They then play at home next Sunday against Northwestern. Time TBA.

Cincinnati Bengal and former Husker Rex Burkhead had two TD runs vs. Baltimore yesterday.

The best record in the NFL goes to New England 14-2. Cleveland had the worst with a 1-15 record.

Randy Gregory had a team high seven tackles for the Cowboys yesterday.

The battle for next year's quarterback is underway. Tanner Lee, Patrick O'Brien, or Tristan Gebbia will be battling for the position. Maybe even Zach Darlington will be in the hunt.

Nebraska Prediction!

First of all kudos to the Nebraska men's basketball team. They played well but had a couple of key turnovers near the end of the game and just beat Dayton 70-68. Glyn Watson and Ed Morrow played real well. Also Tai Webster had a nice game. NU will play UCLA next. They beat Portland tonight. UCLA is No. 14 in the nation.

Ok tomorrow is the last regular season football game until bowl time. We play Iowa which has come on here lately and looks like a very tough foe. A couple of weeks ago they knocked off Michigan.

I have had a very difficult time of predicting the score of this game. I really want NU to win but I just feel Iowa will be the better team tomorrow. Can Tommy Armstrong go the whole game?

I can't take Iowa

Does Nebraska Have a Chance Friday?

Nebraska versus Iowa this Friday!!  Just three or four weeks ago this game looked like an easy win for the Huskers! The Huskers were undefeated and Penn State had beat Iowa 41-14. We didn't realize that Penn State was that good yet.

Earlier in the season South Dakota St had knocked off Iowa. Iowa struggled in a number of games but seemed to win except for Penn State and Wisconsin. When you look back now they had similar winning margins as Nebraska in many of the common opponents.

This week we have some problems with injured quarterbacks. Armstrong has a hamstring and Fyfe has just had surgery on a broken bone in his wrist. Armstrong looks to start but with a hamstring well who knows what will happen. Zac Darlington is getting prepared to play this week. This whole thing will mean a lot as to whether NU can win. Armstrong needs to be healthy to have our best chance. Can we win with Darlington or Fyfe? Yes, with some breaks and if the defense dominates, yes we can.

Can Fyfe match last week's performance. He played great especially in the first half but he also had two or three passes that could have been picked off and that would have changed the complexion of the game. Of course our defense could have had three or four picks too.

Iowa is very strong in special teams. Nebraska has been very inconsistent. If NU can put everything together with special teams this will greatly enhance our chance to win.

The defense needs to hold Iowa to no more than 14-17 points. I don't think we will score much over 21 points. In fact 21 points will probably win this game. Can the defense play like they did most of the game with Maryland but not give up any big plays. They will have to for us to win!

If Nebraska due for some good things?? They have to beat Iowa and Minnesota has to beat Wisconsin for us to play in the Big 10 Championship. Not great odds but its fun to have a chance!

Nebraska Prediction!

I have tried to get a feeling for this all day! I've went back and forth.

I think we will need to hold Corey Clement to under 100 yards today. That will be tough but it is possible. The defensive line seems to keep improving and the Wisconsin quarterbacks are great so if we play run defense well anything can happen.

Nebraska needs to get 350 plus yards on offense and keep turnovers to under two.

But the deciding factor for my prediction is Nebraska's offensive line. Injuries have hurt their performance running lately and we have to be able to run. That scares me.

Hope I am wrong but

Sport Shorts!

NU won again!  I am really concerned about our offensive line. We could not run the ball at all until the 4th quarter. We were lucky to get a yard at times. I have a bunch of injuries and I am not sure if some of the reserves would be doing better than the hurt players. The coaches know best. Our defense overall played pretty good. Very good at times!

What's with the scores of some of these games?  Oklahoma 66 Texas Tech 59,  Rice 65 Prairie View 44, Utah 52 UCLA 45. Lots of scoring! The Big 10 seems to have some lower scoring games with some pretty good defense.

Nebraska moves to No. 7 in the polls. The last two undefeated teams in the Big 10 are Michigan and Nebraska.

Go Cubs!!

Nebraska Prediction!

I am really concerned with the injuries that we have right now. With Westercamp and Cethan carter out, you are talking maybe two of our three biggest threats on offense. Tommy Armstrong Jr is the third. He isn't 100%. With Knevel and possibly Gates out as offensive tackles this will put ore pressure on Armstrong to scramble even more. How many sacks would the opposing teams have if we didn't have a quarterback that can run?? So in the offense line, we only have two original starters left and we are hurting in depth really bad.

What happens if we have another lineman go down or Armstrong twist his ankle to where he can't play?  Not good. Nebraska has to have a game plan that will give us the least chance to get more injuries.

The good news is the defense looks as solid as we have had it in a long time. The defensive line is still giving up too much on the run but considering we lost our four top linemen from last year well they are doing exceptional.

David Blough, their quarterback, killed us last year. Can we contain him this year? We have trouble with that but we should do a much better job this year.We have to contain him to win. Keep him under 75-80 yards rushing.

Purdue has lost their coach. Interim head coach Gerad Parker is in charge today. Will this fire up the players or go the other way. I guess we will find that out.

Last week we were terrible on third down. We were 5-17. That HAS to get better this week.

I thin we can score three or four touchdowns considering no more injuries and we can kick a couple of field goals. So I will go with 31 points for Nebraska. I am going to be optimistic that we can hold them to 14 points.

Nebraska Prediction

Will Nebraska be ready today or do they feel they have already won the game? I don't think so because last year has to be on their mind. What's the key to NU winning?

In the last tw games NU is giving up 6.2 yards per carry from the opposing team. They have alost 500 yards the past two games. Will this continue today? If it does this could be a close game.

If Nebraska holds Illinois to 150 yards or less rushing, NU wins.

If NU goes for 300 yards rushing we win today.

If NU has no injuries in the offensive line today, NU wins. We are pretty solid with our starters but we are lacking some depth right now. Gerald Foster is out for the year and Tanner Farmer is out for this game. It looks like we may have to burn a redshirt if we have an injury.

If NU has four sacks or more today, NU wins.

NU Victory!

Nebraska beat their first non-conference team since 2001. What an exciting game to be at. What a crowd and what a game!!!

My prediction was 34-31 and the final was 35-32. I had some keys to what it would take for us to win.

They were as follows:

1. Ozigbo needed to run 25 times for 175 yards. He ran 21 times for 95 yards.
2. Tommy Armstrong Jr would need to have no interceptions. He threw no interceptions.
3. Cethan Carter would need five receptions for 80 yards. He had five receptions for 48 yards.
4. No blocked punts and Pierson-El would need to run one punt back for 40 plus yards. He had a 45 yard punt return.
5. Royce Freeman would need to be held to under 100 yards. He had five attempts for 31 yards as he was injured early in the game.

Nebraska Prediction

Will Nebraska continue to win the turnover war? They are a plus eight in turnovers and lead the nation in this stat.  If we get three or more turnovers we win the game.

Can Nebraska run on Oregon? I think this is a key to a Nebraska win. They can keep Oregon off the field. If we can run Ozigbo 25 times for 175 yards plus, we win.

How will Tommy Armstrong do today? He is better at the run but can pass on the run too. He is good but no dumb mistakes today. If Armstrong has no interceptions, we win.

Can Cethan Carter become part of the game today? He is very talented. I think if he catches five balls for 80 yards and a TD Nebraska wins.

Can the punt return and punting teams do a much better job today? No blocked punts today and if Pierson-El breaks one punt return for over 40 yards Nebraska wins.

If Nebraska holds Freeman the Oregon running back to 100 yards or less Nebraska wins.

If there is a lot of running it could keep the score down some.

Sports Shorts!

Nebraska has outscored their opponents in the 4th quarter 50-0 so far this year. Great finishers and that is an indication they are well conditioned. Now we have Oregon this week and we have a good chance to win that one.

Nebraska is 29th in the AP poll. If they keep winning they will get there.

Congrats to Adam Carriker who is now a member of the Nebraska Hall of Fame.

Omaha North and Bellevue West are No. 1 and 2 in Top 10 this week.

Nebraska is a PLUS 7 in turnovers this year.

Did anybody see Coach Cavanaugh and Gates go at it after Gates got a flag thorn on him?

Nebraska is the early favorite for the game this weekend. Should be a great one!!

Nebraska is tied with Ohio State in turnover margin but they are last in net punting.

Sport Shorts!

Nebraska won 43-10 Saturday night in a game that will be remembered for the honor paid to Sam Foltz. You have heard all about it but being there was very emotional. Tearful!

The Nebraska defense played pretty well and with Nathan Gerry and Antonio Reed coming back this week we should be stronger. Keiron Williams was exceptional although the coaches said he was out of position now and then. The defensive line played pretty well I thought. We have a lot of talent at linebacker. Chris Jones had a good game also.

On offense it just didn't fill right. They ran the ball for almost 300 yards but the passing just didn't seem to click reak well. Alonzo Moore had a great game catching a 57 yard TD. Devine Ozigbo and Tre Bryant looked very good.

We should see some major improvement in game two.

Wyoming will be a tougher opponent this week. They have a 6'5" quarterback in Josh Allen. He can throw the ball real well. Their tailback Brian Hill is pretty good too.

Will Compton and Niles Paul have been named team captains for the Washington Redskins.

Nebraska prediction!!

Today is the day!  Nebraska football starts again.

Tonight we play Fresno State. It will be a good team to play in the first game.

Our key to how good we play is our offensive and defensive lines. Also will Armstrong limit mistakes or will Ryker Fyfe enter the game today. I think Armstrong will shine but he may make an error or two with turnovers. The offensive line play will be interesting with Sam Hahn taking over at left guard. I am interested in how Knevel plays at right tackle. If he can dominate I think we will be good today.

What about our defensive line? The starting unit should be pretty good and then from there we will see. Sounds like we will see some 3-4 defensive which will go to our strengths. If Nebraska can get four or five sacks today that would be very encouraging. It will be fun to see how some of the younger defensive subs play. Who will step up?

Fresno State will be playing an upbeat tempo on offense and I am anxious to see how our substitute safeties do. Gerry and Antonio Reed will not play today. I am not sure if Reed would have started but he is close.

Special teams will be key. Don't expect the world from our new punter. He is a freshman playing in his first game and he will have some moments I am sure.

I am interested in Tre Bryant and Person-El returning kickoffs and punts.

I think that Fresno State will break some big plays here and there but NU will win! Chason Virgil likes to throw but on this night NU will run and run!
