Wisconsin is rated #5 by Pomeroy!

The #5 team in the country takes on Nebraska tonight. The game is with Wisconsin at Wisconsin. Nebraska is rated #138. Nebraska played basically five players on Saturday. Fatigue is a factor. Nebraska took Sunday off. Andre Almeida will not play tonight due to an injury.

Nerbaska lost in Lincoln in a close game 47-41. A player that hurts the Huskers is Ryan Evans. Jared Berggren and Ben Brust also are excellent players. Wisconsin is well coached. They are disciplined and patient.

My guess is this will be a low scoring game. For Nebraska to win they will need to keep Wisconsin below 52 points and Ray Gallegos and Dylan Talley will need to be hitting on all cylinders this time. Shavon Shields will have to have another great game.

Can't see Nebraska winning tonight. Hope I am wrong.

Lots of Sports to Talk About!

Wow what a game in Lincoln yesterday against Iowa. Nebraska outscored Iowa 39-19 in the second half to win 64-60. Dylan Talley hit a three with 9.2 seconds left to put NU up 63-60. Fun game. What a comeback. I just wished it would have been on regular TV. At the game the 2,000-3,000 Iowa fans were louder than NU in the first half. They were quieter late in the game.

In the last two games(MSU & Iowa),  Shavon Shields has averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds with 54% shooting. Nerbaska was rated as low as 218th in the Pomeroy ratings earlier in the season. They are now 138th.

This was the second to last men's basketball game at Bob Devaney. The very first game in Devaney was against Iowa also. Nebraska lost that first game 71-57. Their first win was against Washington and it took overtime to win on November 29, 1976.

Nebraska is now 13-14. They play three of the next four games away with Minnesota coming to Lincoln on Wednesday, March 6th. Nebraska plays Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa away. They will be underdogs in all of the four final games. Even though Nebraska has the third toughest schedule in men's college basketball, they probably need to win two out of four games to have any chance of playing in some kind of post season tournament.

The Omaha World-Heral picked their greatest Devaney Era players. They are Dave Hoppen, Eric Piatkowski, Tyronne Lue, Andre Smith, and Venson Hamilton. I got to see all of these players play. I also remember Jack Moore, Brian Downing, Carl McPipe, Brian Banks, Bernard Day, Eric Johnson, Rich King, Brian Carr, Jamar Johnson, Beau Reid, Bruce Chubick, Jaron Boone, Erick Strickland, Mikki Moore, Cookie Belcher, Kimani Ffriend, Cary Cochran, Nate Johnson, Brian Conklin, Aleks Maric, Ade Dagunduro, Ryan Anderson, Bo Spenver, and Lance Jeter. There are tons more that made great contributions to the program.

I also got to see Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Dennis Rodman, and the championship Bulls play an exdhibition game in 1998 against our own Eric Piakowski. Rodman was ejected from the game when he went over after being called for a foul and grabbed a telephone along court and acted like he was making a call.

Concerts were always fun at the Devaney. One I remember was Neil Sedaka.

And then all the drama with the High School Basketball Tournaments. The Omaha World-Herald rates the1989 Class B final as its number one game. Wahoo won 68-66 when Troy Glock made a shot at the buzzer for Wahoo. The number two game is when Ogallala beat Wahoo in the 1992 semis 84-68 to break Wahoo's 114 game winning streak. The longest winning streak in the nation at that time.

Austen Everson was in Holdrege Friday night at the Holdrege Rotary Club meeting. He is the UNL Director of On-Campus recruiting. The former quarterback from Ohio wss humorous and informative in showing the group videos of all recruits and then he making comments regarding their accomplishments in high school. It was very interesting.

I especially liked the video of Nathan Gerry, Drake Martinez, Randy Gregory, Adam Taylor, and Terrel Newby. The defensive linemen looked pretty awesome also.

Nathan Gerry is out of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He is listed as a defensive back. He also is a punt and kickoff returner. He is quick and fast. Looks like he could play receiver for sure also. He stuck out as one of the best in the class. We could see him this fall.

Drake Martinez, Taylor's brother, is so fast and he is big. He is just as fast as Taylor or maybe faster. He could be a great safety. Don't be surprised is he gets some major time this fall if he can figure out the schemes right away.

Randy Gregory is a defensive end that could start this fall. If they move Jason Anruh to the middle of the line, Gregory can fill in nicely. He is 6'6" but is only 230 in weight but he has the frame to add some weight. Mixon, Natter, and Suttles add to an A+ group of defensive ends.

Adam Taylor is the best running back coming out of Texas and Terrell Newby was the best out of California. These guys are both very good and both may see time this fall. Great pickups.

The offensive line has Matt Finnin at 6'7", Zach Hannen at 6'5", Dwayne Johnson at 6'6", David Knevel at 6'9", and Chongo Kondola at 6'4". HUGE!

The only Nebraska recruit is Josh Banderas who will be playing linebacker. He will be a great player before he leaves Nebraska.

I look to our quarterback recruit Johnny Stanton to redshirt this fall unless there are injuries.

I  like Marcus Newby at linebacker seeing some time this fall. He is a great defensive player from Maryland. Courtney Love from Ohio looks very solid.

The balance of the recruits are all solid and there is probably a diamond  or two in the rough with these guys.

The 2014 class will have needs at cornerback and tight end.

An LA high school has hired Marvin Sanders who was let go by USC after the season.

The lady NU basketball team won their ninth game in a row by beating Iowa today by 20 points, 66-46. Rachel Theriot had a career high 19 points. The women are peaking at a really good time.

The NU baseball team went 0-7 when they got beat by Texas 2-0. Today the pitching was excellent but the Texas pitcher, Nathan Thornhill was dominating. The good news is that Nebraska's starting pitching has been pretty good. We have to get better relief pitching. We did today but the offense just couldn't hit the Texas pitching.

Rex Burkhead has a good combine except for his 4.73 40. We know he will do better at the Pro Day in Lincoln. Knile Davis of Arkansas ran 4.37 in the 40 yard dash. Burkhead was second in running the cones which isn't surprising. He was also swcond in the broad jump.

Jimmie Johnson won the Daytona 500. My picks of Harvick, Stewart, and Kenseth wrecked or had engine trouble. Oh well we got 35 more races to go.

Wake Forest knocked off Miami 80-65. Miami was the Number 2 team in the nation. Many think they will win it all.

Did you see the attempted kiss by 50 Cent on Erin Andrews?

Unless Creighton finishes strong, they may be one of the more disappointing teams in the country. In the last 11 games they are 5-6.

The Iowa men's basketball team loss to Nebraska may have put them out of the NCAA tournment. Now Iowa has to win at Indiana to have a chance which means they don't have much of a chance.

Talley's Heroics Lead Huskers Past Hawkeyes

Talley's Heroics Lead Huskers Past Hawkeyes

Iowa will be tough test today!

#29 Iowa comes to Lincoln today to play the NU men's basketball team ranked at #145. Looks like it could be an easy victory for the Hawkeyes. Mike Gesell, the South Sioux City freshman for Iowa, comes back to Bob Devaney. That's one highlight of the game of why I want to watch it. Man, I wished we could have got him at NU.

Adam Woodbury, a 7'1" freshman from Sioux City, also starts. He's another one we didn't get.

Roy Marble is their star player. He could be NBA potential. Watch out for Aaron White also. He is really good.

Nebraska has been playing teams tough but they have been outmanned most of the year. They aren't deep. Iowa is very deep and will keep fresh bodies in the game. It will be an uphill game for the Huskers who are 5 1/2 point underdogs.

So I look to this game to be the team we upset at home this year. Only Minnesota is left after this.

Pfeifer takes second at state wrestling!

Holdrege's Jacob Pfeifer earned second at the State Wrestling meeting in Omaha in Class B. He wrestled in the 138 lb division and was beaten by Joeseph Hayek of Seward in a sudden victory 3-1. Tied 1-1 Pfeifer was beaten with about two seconds left in the match. Congrats to Jacob.

The most exciting time of the year ( I have about four of them) is coming with March Madness and the Nebraska High School Basketball TOURNAMENTS. Nascar's Daytona 500 is next Sunday! Let the fun begin.

Kyle Brey is a new graduate assistant at Nebraska with his duties being the tight ends. Brey is the son of Notre Dame head basketball coach Mike Brey. Brey has taken Notre Dame to the NCAA tournament five of the past six years.

I went to the Nebraska-Michigan St. game last night. Michigan St. is a Top 10 team. Nebraska is a Top 150 team. But with the Nebraska crowd  cheering them on, Nebraska was in the game until the final minutes. Gallegos was 0-13 from the field which was very unusual but if he made three or four of those, who knows what would have happened. The Nebraska big men missed some point blank shots also. Nebraska is playing better and the fans are already looking to next year.

The baseball team went 0-4 on the west coast. Not the start we were hoping for. Hopefully it was a learning experience for them and improvement will happen as the year goes on.

Huskers Fall to No. 8 Michigan State

Huskers Fall to No. 8 Michigan State

Michigan St. is the best team in America?

Nebraska played #1 Indiana this week and held in there for a while, then got beat 76-47. Indiana is good, very good. Some say Michigan St. is better. That's who NU plays tonight at 7:05 in Lincoln. The home court will help.

Michigan St is a Top 10 team who happens to be 21-4 in a tough Big 10 conference. They are 10-2 in league play. Nebraska is 12-13 and 3-9 in the league.

Michigan St has won five games in a row. Lately Michigan St is playing Branden Dawson 6-6, Adreian Payne 6-10, and Derrick Nix 6-9 all at the same time on the floor. This will cause NU some serious trouble from the first time they played each other, a game Michigan St. won 66-56 in Lansing. Rebounding will be a huge problem for NU and staying out of foul trouble will be a challenge also.

Can NU pull off their annual upset of a ranked team tonight. It looks too tough to accomplish.

Baseball is near!

Baseball is coming soon. The Nebraska Cornhuskers open play at Bakersfield/California on February 15th. NU plays 18 games against 2012 NCAA tourament teams.

Leading off for the Huskers will be Sophomore second baseman Pat Kelly. Kelly batted .313 last year as a freshman. He had eight homers and 37 RBI's. He was second team All-Big-10 and a Freshman All-American. He played shortstop last year but is back to second base with Chad Christensen back after an injury.

With only two scholarship upperclassman this fall at safety, Nebraska needs some freshman to step up. Corey Cooper and Harvey Jackson are the only two safeties that are other than a freshman.

Drake Martinez, who is Taylor's brother, may get some playing time if he can learn the system quickly. He is 6'2" and 200 lbs. and he is fast. He will be one of the fastest players on the team. He runs a 4.4 40 yards dash.

This past year of recruiting in the Big 10 was interesting. Ohio had 53 players that received scholarships. Next was Illinois with 28, followed by Florida with 24. Ohio has 246 kids on scholarship in the Big 10. Florida has 144 and Illinois has 118.

Nebraska had two scholarship players in the 2013 class and has 14 overall.

By the way Michigan is fourth in total scholarships in the Big 10  with 104, Texas is next with 83.

This year NU took four kids from California, three each from Texas, Ohio, and Florida. There are 23 kids on scholarship on the entire team from Texas, seventeen from California, and eleven from Nebraska.

Ram Trucks Super Bowl Commercial "Farmer"

Who wins the Super Bowl?

This game is full of stories with two brothers coaching against each other. The Harbaughs!! This has never happened before. Colin Kaepernick is a great quarterback who can run like no other. He will keep San fransisco in the game but he has only started nine games. Joe Flacco is one of the best post season quarterbacks ever, yes ever.

The NFC is the stronger league in my opinion. They had the best teams this year. But the AFC has a hand full of great teams at the top and Baltimore is the best of them.

Baltimore has a Nebraska Cornhusker. Seward native and former UNL punter Sam Koch keeps Nebraska's streak of having the most number of consecutive players in the Super Bowl.

I don't have a strong feel on this one. I like the San Fransisco 49ers but I will go with Baltimore in a close one.

Ohio State is #11!!!

Nebraska continues to play one of the toughest schedules in these United States in college basketball. In about an hour they go against Ohio State rated #11. Nebraska has worked up to #152. Nebraska is 11-11 and have lost seven of their last nine but much of that time they have played pretty well.

Ohio St. has averaged 72 points per game and manhandled Nebraska earlier in the season at Ohio St. This time it is in Lincoln which will help. Ohio St. is 16-4 overall and 6-2 in the conference. They are led by Deshaun Thomas who is averaging 20 points a game. He is an All-American and Nebraska has nobody that can match up to him. Nebraska also lacks depth.

You take Thomas out of the lineup and I think Nebraska could be Ohio St. tonight. That means Nebraska is one or two great players away from being at or near the top.

Ray Gallegos is ninth in the Big 10 in points and 9th in steals. He is 32nd nationally in 3-pointers. Brandon Ubel is ranked 10th in rebounds in the big 10.

Ohio St. is one of the best teams in the nation in turnovers.

Ohio St. is favored by 13 points.

Tonight's score will be close to:

Ohio State 72 Nebraska 60
