Nebraska goes against Indiana today at 4:30. Indiana is No. 4 in the nation in scoring. Nebraska will need to keep the score lower to win the game.Watch Yogi Ferrell who is Indiana's top player. he had 27 points against Georgetown.  Look to Nebraska to win in a very good game.

2014 Highlights

2014 was a very eventful year for NU and Nebraska sports. It was easy to pick No. 1 highlight but then after that it became harder. These were the feel good moments!

1. Bud Crawford defends his WBO Lightweight Championship against Yurkorkis Gamboa at the CenturyLink in Omaha. In June I saw the best sporting event I have ever witnesses when my brother and I went to this boxing event. The crowd was absolutely crazy. Michael Buffer is better in person than he is on TV. Unbelievable. Crawford won in a knockout in the ninth round in a spectacular ending!! The boxing crowd likes to have fun! I am so glad I attended this. I had been following Terrance Crawford for the past few years and now he is the champ!  He fount in November again and won in a decision against Raymundo Beltran. Watched that one on TV but it didn't have the pizzazz as the first fight.

2. Nebraska beating Wisconsin in a No Sit Sunday crowd on March 9th to go to the NCAA tournament. Nebraska upset No. 9 Wisconsin 77-68. Terran Petteway had 26 points and 10 rebounds and this crowd cheered NU on the whole game. There was no quiet moments. NU finished the year 19-11. NU went to the NCAA tournament for the first time in many years. Also Mike Peltz proposed before the game.

3, Creighton beating Providence at the CenturyLink. Creighton beat Providence 88-73. This was the first Creighton game I have been to at CenturyLink. They have great fans. Doug McDermott hit for 45. This was his last home game. He is part of the 3000 club. It was Senior Night. Creighton was headed to the NCAA tournament. Great atmosphere.

4. Ameer Abdullah breaking six, seven, eight tackles for NU to beat McNeese St. in the final seconds. Tremendous run by Abdullah. Great win at the end in a game that wasn't supposed to be close. Relief and a victory.

5. Nebraska volleyball beating Washington on their home floor in the NCAA tournament. I watched this one on the tube but I couldn't leave the room. Great young team!

Nebraska has hired Andy Vaughn to be the Director of Football and Recruiting Operations. He comes from Nevada and has ties to Clemson.

Jack McVeigh is a 6'8" shooting guard is making an official visit to Nebraska. He played for the Australian U-18 national team and averaged 24.3 points and 10.3 rebounds. He is also making an official visit to LSU. It looks like it is down to those two teams.

Akoy Agau has two years of eligibility left and will have an unofficial visit to Nebraska. He has had visits to Marquette and Missouri-Kansas City and has Georgetown and Wichita State as teams he wants to look at. He was on the Louisville team but decided recently to transfer. He has to sit out two semesters. So he could start to play a year from now if he gets enrolled at Nebraska this semester.

Suh has been suspended from the first playoff game but is appealing.

The Minnesota Timberwolves is the worst team in the NBA.

The Boston Celtics are one of the worst teams!

The Lakers are in the bottom ten teams of the NBA.

The Miami Heat are now in the bottom half of the NBA,

The best team right now could be the Houston Rockets!

Michigan has hired Jim Harbaugh. Mike Riley was his head coach at San Diego.

Jimmy Butler continues to put up huge numbers for the Bulls.

Dallas had the second fewest sacks in the NFL this year. Way to coach Bill Callahan.

Sports Shorts! Rex Burkhead has a touchdown!

Rex Burkhead  had three carries for fourteen yards today. He also scored on a ten yard touchdown. YES!!!

Nebraska men's basketball pulled out a stressful, error filled game last night versus Cincinnati. It was so bad that I almost turned the channel. Nebraska is definitely not big and they don't have much for shooters after Petteway and Shields and sometimes Pitchford. But they do fight and claw and hustle. That's what won them the game last night in two overtimes.

Now the really sad projection. Pomeroy, which rates by computer the college football teams, has Nebraska at No. 84. They have dropped twenty places in the past week. Pomeroy projects Nebraska to have a record of 13-15 and going 7-11 in the Big 10.  Right now that seems believable but Coach Miles makes them better every year so let's see what happens this year.

NU's next game is December 23rd at Hawaii. Hawaii is 6-3. NU should win that game!

Kudos to the NU volleyball team.  They were great against Washington. They weren't too bad against BYU but BYU swept in three.  NU is very young. Next year they will start the season rated pretty high I would guess.

Calvin Strong leads the World-Herald's All Nebraska team. In fact this will be his third year in a row to win All Nebraska running back. Will Nebraska offer him a scholarship now? Talent wise he looks a lock-in so there must be some other problems he is having for us not to jump on him. Right now Strong is a South Dakota recruit.

CJ Johnson is a wide receiver at Bellevue West. He is a recruit at Wyoming. Nebraska may try to get him now also. We will see.

Johnny Manziel was bad today!!  Only looks to get better.

Four star rated offensive guard Jalin Barnett has Nebraska now his favorite school to attend. Oklahoma is also recruiting him. Jalin is rated 136th overall player in the country , seventh at his position and the 3rd best player in Oklahoma. Barnett is from Lawton, Oklahoma. He visited NU this weekend.

Tight end recruit Matt Snyder from San Ramon, California is committed to Oregon St. but visited NU this weekend. Snyder was blown away by the visit. Snyder has a three star rating and has other offers from California, Colorado St., Fresno St., and Utah St.

Adrienne Talan visited NU this weekend. He is a three star outside linebacker out of Pembroke Pine, Florida. His offers are from Oregon St., Temple, and Nebraska.

Three star Nick Thomas visited this weekend from Bradenton, Florida. He is an inside linebacker. He has committed to Wisconsin but is looking now with the coaching change. He has offers from Hawaii and Nevada also. He plans to make a decision by the end of the week.

Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin said that Nebraska, outside of Louisville, has the best arena he has been in. Awesome praise

How did you decorate your trees?

We had old ornaments that we used for the tree.

December 14
Did you hang a Christmas stocking?

We hung a stocking every Christmas eve. I found out their wasn't a Santa--I heard Dad say to Mom. "Shall we fill their stockigs tonight or wait until morning."

December 15
Did your Grandpa or Grandma ever make gifts for you? What?

Grandma Norman made us mittens.

December 16
Tell about the neatest present you remember giving to your Mom.

I don't remember what we gave to Mom. I think my uncle, Melvin, helped us with it.

December 17
Tell about the neatest present you remember giving to your Dad.

John, I don't remember the most memorable gift we gave you. (From John:I think the most memorable gifts I got were a tricycle, wagon, bicycle, and boxing gloves. We usually got one nice gift a year and those along with the electric football game were the best. I never got clothes because I wore Jimmy Gessford's hand-me-downs.

December 25
Tell about the most memorable gifts I have given you.

I don't remember what you gave me. Maybe you remember. (From John: Well I don't think it was much. Barb and I didn't have money when we were younger. Dad helped us buy her an outfit or maybe an appliance for the kitchen.

December 26
Do you remember celebrating any special wedding anniversaries of your parents or grandparents?

I never knew my grandparents on Dad's side. They were in Sweden, My mother's dad died before I was born. My Mom and Dad celebrated their 50th anniversary with an open house at the Fridhem Lutheran Church in Funk.  (From John: My dad sang the "Our Father" at their anniversary.)

December 27
Share any other Christmas memory.

My grandmother, Mary Norman, always made homemade wine at Christmas.

December 28
Is there anything else you would like me to know about my childhood?

We lived on the farm, walked 2 miles every day to school in the country. We had a nice childhood.

December 29
Is there anything else that you would like me to know about your childhood?

We lived in the country east of Orleans.

December 30
Did you ever make New Year's resolutions?

No.

December 31
What special memories do you have of New Year's Eve or New Year's Day?

I really don't remember what we did for New Year's Eve or New Year's Day.  (From John: Uh, mom I think I remember. You partied just about every New Year's Eve until you got into the Steakhouse.)

That's it!! 365 questions have been answered and we learned a lot about mom's childhood.

Huskers Begin Holiday Bowl Practice

Nebraska men's Basketball tonight!!

Prediction:

Nebraska plays Incarnate Word who are 5-1 with their only loss to UTEP 81-65. I think tonight will be a similar score but Nebraska has to get more than two scorers shooting well. Teams are overplaying Shields and Petteway and challenging the rest of the team to go ahead and shoot. Against Creighton there wasn;t really anybody else. Yes, Rivers hit a few points but we have to get better. I thought Abraham was a plus when he was in the game. Wished he would have played more in the second half because Creighton dominated us underneath.

Husker Win Streak Comes to an End in Five Sets at No. 11 Illinois

Happy Thanksgiving! A Nebraska prediction!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!! Give thanks to Lord for everything we have!

The greatest sporting event I have ever been to was the Bud Crawford fight at the CenturyLink a few months ago. Just electric and the crowd was amazing.

Well this Saturday Crawford defends his WBO  and Ring lightweight title in Omaha this Saturday. I really wished I was going again!! Crawford (24-0 17 knockouts) fights Ray Beltran (29-6 17 knockouts). Crawford should win this fight and he is so fun to watch. Catch it on HBO Saturday night. Great entertainment!!

It was a downer last Saturday when Minnesota beat the Nebraska football team. I rewatched the game and there were probably five or six plays that went Minnesota's way and if one of them would have went Nebraska, they would have won. A lot of things went right for Minnesota and give them credit they are a good football team.

Nebraska is a good football team too but not great. Lots of talk this week to get rid of the coaching staff. Either Pelini and the entire staff need to go or at least some of the staff. I won't make a judgement either way. But who are we going to get to come to Nebraska to fight the recruiting disadvantage we have here in Nebraska? Just a question. We can't push a button and say you come here. There aren't a lot of coaches who some people think would be better than what we have that really want to recruit at a disadvantage like we have.

After the Nebraska football team's loss the men's basketball team took a hit at Rhode Island. I think the NU men's basketball team is very good but until we get a good big guy or two underneath we won't hit the upper ten teams in the nation. But we can play against most everybody and compete.

So we have a disadvantage in recruiting because of population and distance so why didn't we grab Drew Ott from Gilter. Everything pointed to the fact he was going to be good. Get the great ones in Nebraska when we have a chance. Ott is Iowa's top defensive lineman and will be in the NFL soon.

Also I am not sure of Calvin Strong's pro and cons but as far as talent I think Nebraska should grab him. Looks like he is going to South Dakota for school but he looks amazing.

The Nebraska volleyball team dropped a five set game to Illinois last night. Illinois was rated No.11 and Nebraska No.10. It was at Illinois.

In high school football, GI and Kearney ended up being rated 6th and 10th respectively. McCook ended up 4th in Class B with Cozad No. 6 in C-1. There were no area teams in C-2 rated but in Eight Man-1 Elm Creek was rated 3rd. Again there were no area schools rate in Eight Man-2.

Pro football schedule today:
Chicago at Detroit  11:30 am
Philadelphia at Dallas 3:30 pm
Seattle at San Fransisco 7:20 pm

College football
TCU at Texas 6:30 pm  Watch for Texas to pull the upset!!!!!!!
LSU at Texas A & M

Nebraska plays Iowa tomorrow and it comes down to these teams are both just matched equally. Nebraska is a little better team but Iowa has the home field advantage. It is also possible that neither Kenny Bell or Randy Gregory will be on the field Friday for NU. Probably won't end in a tie so I am going with this:

Two Overtimes
Nebraska 37
Iowa 31

Can Nebraska Rebound?

Nebraska played well last week for one and a half quarters and then Melvin Gordon ran for 42 yards and Nebraska seemed to lose its confidence on that play. Can we rebound this week? The point spread is 10 points. Nebraska is favored. Minnesota looked good against Ohio St. They are for real but so is Nebraska, well until last weekend.

Safety D.J. Singleton has left the Nebraska football team. He was a potential starter for next year or at least he may have been the first sub in after Gerry and Alexander.

Texas basketball beat Iowa tonight 71-57.

Creighton beat Oklahoma last night!  That was a surprise to me. Looks like they have some great players again.

Kobe Bryant is now #4 in all time scoring in the NBA. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had 38,387, Karl Malone 36,928, Michael Jordan 32,292, and Kobe Bryant has 32,001.

San Diego has traded OF Reymond Fuentes to the KC Royals for pitcher Kyle Bartsch. Fuentes comes from Double A and Bartsch from A ball.

KC's Billy Butler is going to the Oakland A's and has signed a three year deal.

Cal-State Bakersfield missed the first 20 shots from the field before making one against San Diego St. The teams combined to start 4 for 40 from the field.

K-State beat West Virginia tonight in football 26-20.

It looks like Oakland is going to win but there is 1:30 left to play.

If the Royals when on Tuesday they tie for the most consecutive wins in a playoff with 10.  The other two teams were both Yankee squads. The Royals are hot and everybody is peaking at the right time.

Nebraska football playoffs
Gretna is the only team in Class B that is unbeaten. The top four teams in Class B are all in the same district. Three of those teams can make it to the playoffs. The top four teams are Gretna, Elkhorn, Omaha Scutt, and Elkhorn South.

Omaha North and Millard North are bot undefeated in Class A.

The C-1 playoffs should be very exciting with four teams undefeated and then you have a team like GI Central Catholic who can beat anybody at 6-2 and rated 8th.

Eight Man-1 has seven undefeated teams yet.

Lee Barfknecht has Nebraska rated third in the Big 10 behind Michigan St. and Ohio St. Probably a pretty fair rating right now.

Rutgers, our opponent this week is 5-2 and he has them rated 9th . Nebraska is a 17 point favorite over Rutgers.

Mississippi St. No. 1!!! Can't even believe it.

Nebraska has moved up to 16th.

BTN's special documentary "Unbeaten" is absolutely one of the greatest shows I have seen. It is on Brook Berringer and it is so well done.

I see Barrett Ruud is helping coach the defense for the Cornhuskers. I am sure he is a huge asset to the program.

Right now Michigan St. 3-0 (East) and Minnesota 3-0 (West) lead the divisions of the Big 10.

UNK won their second game of the year beating Lindenwood 31-13. It marked the 100th career win for Coach Darrell Morris.

How good is DeMornay Pierson-El. He is so fast.

Ameer Abdullah is now the No. 2 all time rusher at Nebraska. He has 4,001 yards and just passed Ahman Green with 3,880.

Could it be possible that Shavon Shields is as good or better than Terran Petteway? They are both very good.

Walter Pitchford will be key to Nebraska taking it to the next level this year. When he played well last year, Nebraska won.

NU volleyball: Illini finally beat Huskers : Latest Husker News

NU volleyball: Illini finally beat Huskers : Latest Husker News

Great article on Brook Berringer!

http://www.huskers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=1&SPID=22&DB_LANG=C&ATCLID=209721599&DB_OEM_ID=100

Royals and the Huskers!

First of all let's talk about those Royals. They have swept everything so far. They are winning with a little bit of everything!  But if they have a lead after five or six innings, well their relievers are the best in baseball. They are amazing.

Tuesday night at 7:07 the Royals start the World Series against the San Fransisco Giants. The Royals have James Shields (15-8) on the mound and the Giants have Madison Bumgarner (20-11).
So can the Royals continue to roll. I think so. They may not sweep but they will be very competitive.

The first two games are at home on Tuesday and Wednesday. Then they go to San Fran for three games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. If needed, they go back to KC for games Tuesday and Wednesday, the 28th and 29th.

Millard North knocked off Papillion South last night 24-21 to go 8-0. Millard North is coached by one of the best coaches in Nebraska, Fred Petito.

Gretna beat Elkhorn last night in a game of unbeatens 17-14. Reserve QB Chase Templeton drove 81 yards in 8 plays in the final two minutes to win the game. Gretna is the only undefeated team left in Class B.

The No. 9 team in Class C-1 beat Holdrege last night 42-7. Hastings SC lost to Sutton last night in C-2 action. Hastings SC was No. 2.

Now to college football, Iowa vs. Maryland is a pretty big game today for the Big 10. It starts at 11 am on ESPN2. Maryland is favored by five points! An interesting game in the Big 10 is Rutgers at Ohio St. with Ohio St favored by 22 points. Rutgers is 5-1.

Texas is only 2-4 this year. I wonder if they will win six to be bowl eligible.

After the game tonight BTN is featuring a Brook Berringer documentary. It's called Unbeaten:The life of Brook Berringer. It is supposed to be very good and impactful as Sam McKewon of the Omaha World-Herald put it. I am very excited to see it. Hope you do too.

So now to the Nebraska game vs. Northwestern. This is a series of very close games with Nebraska coming out the top in last second heroics. The last three games they have played, Nebraska has come out on top by a total of seven points. In 2011, Northwestern beat then No. 9 Nebraska 28-25. Nebraska has had a week to heal and that is huge. They do have David Santos back. Brandon Reilly is finally practicing which is the first time this season. Kenney Bell is back.

But we play at Northwestern and they are now playing pretty well. They are very capable of beating Nebraska. Nebraska is 5-1 and Northwestern is 3-3.

So this week will Nebraska be back to running the football over 300 yards or will this be the running attack that Michigan St. stopped cold. My guess is we will run the ball pretty well.

Nebraska plays well after a Bye week and this should be no exception. Here's this week's prediction!

Nebraska 31 Northwestern 21

Blowout turns to an almost win!

People went to sleep at half. They had got so excited for Nebraska to finally win a huge game and get back to one of the best in the nation. Tons of upsets in college football. We were moving up to the Top 10 with a win.

But on this day, the Michigan St. defense annihilated us and the offensive line could do nothing. It's as if they had an invisible extra man playing especially when Jake Cotton fell over backwards before a play started.  Ameer couldn't find room to run. It reminded me of the days when Oklahoma dominated us and we couldn't run against them. The yardage difference at halftime was MSU 257 NU 85. Complete domination.

Michigan St. led  27-3 in the third quarter. The blowout begins. MSU had eight plays of 20 plus yardage that was killing Nebraska. Kenny Bell was hurt and was out for this game. We needed a playmaker. Ameer had 20 yards on 13 carries at half.

Then at the end we could have won. A remarkable catch by Alonzo Moore would have done it. A pass interference call on two Huskers on that play may of done it. A pass interference call on the Huskers last offensive play may have done it. A non-fumble by Ameer might have done it. So many things to look back on now. The great thing was the Huskers kept going and going and didn't give up.

Will we meet MSU again in the Big 10 Championship?? I really hope so.

I am a little surprised by the lack of success from a couple of backs that have transferred from Nebraska. Braylon Heard is at Kentucky and ran only six times for 67 yards and caught three passes for 21 yards. Just surprised he doesn't have more carries.

Aaron Green had six carries for 26 yards for TCU Saturday and had one catch for eight yards.

Mississippi St. stunned Texas A & M yesterday 48-31. Who is Mississippi St.'s coach? A guy by the name of Dan Mullen Mullen was the offensive coordinator under Urban Meyer at Florida.

Mississippi beat Alabama yesterday in another upset. Hugh Freeze is Mississippi's coach. He has been at Ole Miss for a while but left when they hired Houston Nutt. He was at Arkansas St. during that time and since 2012 has been Ole Miss's coach.

Did you see the videos of Katie Perry partying with the Ole Miss fans?

Northwestern looked like the worst team in the Big 10 a few weeks ago and now is at the top of the West Division with a 2-0 record. They beat Wisconsin yesterday 20-14.

College football is full of parity. It looks like anybody can beat anybody any week. The West Division of the Big 10 is definately that way. Northwestern leads. Iowa and Minnesota follow in the standings. No game is a mimmee from here on out.

What a punt return by DeMornay Pierson-El!! He is good if he gets a little room.

So Nebraska has Kenny Bell hurt. Daniel Davies also left the game with a knee injury. Cethan Carter did not suit up because of a leg injury. The Bye week will hopefully be a time of healing.

Trevor Roach had 18 tackles on Saturday night!!

The Kansas City Royals play at 6:30 tonight in Kansas City. Tey lead the Angels 2-0. Go Royals. Jamie Shields pitches for KS tonight.

Big day for NU football!

This senior class probably plays four or five games in their college career that is as big as the one today. It's a special day for them. Tonight NU football goes to East Lansing, Michigan to play a very good Michigan St. team. Michigan St. is a Top 10 team right now. They pretty much outplayed Oregon for three quarters. Can NU respond?

I think this is going to be a great game. This is the tipping point as such. Will NU go to one of the elite teams again in college football with a win away from Lincoln? A victory that could put them in the top eight or ten teams in the nation.

Nebraska will have to play its best game of the year which means:

1. Don't shoot yourself in the foot with tounovers. Nebraska will need to be +2 in tournovers.
2. Special teams continues to play well.
3. The offensive line controls their defensive line.
4. The wet grass field is not a factor for NU's footwork

Michigan State's Connor Cook is a good one. Hopefully our front seven can keep him off balance the whole. day. He's hitting almost 70% on passes compared to Tommy Armstrong's 54%. Cook has two interceptions to Armstrong's three. Armstron has more yards and touchdowns.

Michigan St. is averaging 50 points a game. Nebraska is averaging 45 points per game. Michigan St. is giving up 20 points a game and Nebraska allows 19 points.  Michigan St allowed 46 points to Oregon.

Home field advantage is Michigan St. although NU doesn't play bad away from home.

Heros today will be the No. 4's which is Armstrong and Gregory. Armstrong has to be strong today. Has to be. Look to the tight ends to catch a TD today. Probably Cethan Carter. Ameer will be good as always.

PREDICTION:

Nebraska 30
Michigan St. 27

Sport Shorts

Tim Beck and Scott Frost are listed as candidates for the Kansas job after Charlie Weiss was fired this weekend.

Nebraska had two offensive linemen commit for the 2016 class. They are John Raridon, a 6'4"270 lb center-guard out of West Des Moines, Iowa. His dad played for Nebraska. SCOUT has him as a top 100 pick, 247Sports has him No. 35 in the country, and ESPN has him listed at No. 69. He had offers from Iowa, Iowa St., Oklahoma, and Wisconsin.

They also got a pledge from Bryan Brokop, a Chicago area offensive tackle. Nebraska is his first offer.

What a blast Randy Gregory made on his block when Nathan Gerry intercepted on Saturday night.

Nebraska plays at 7 pm Saturday night vs. Michigan St. and the game is on ABC! Michigan St. is favored by eight points.

Ameer Abdullah was the Big 10 Player of the Week!!

Will Brady Hoke get fired during the season or will they wait until the season is over? Michigan has only won three of its last 11 games.

The most inconsistent team in the Big 10 is Indiana beating Missouri a week ago and then losing to Maryland 37-15 this week.

Is this weekend the preview for the Big 10 Championship with Nebraska vs. Michigan St. Wisconsin and Ohio St. may have a say about that.

Nebraska Prediction

Last week Brad Kaaya, a true freshman, threw for 359 yards and three touchdowns vs. Nebraska. Illinois QB Wes Lunt leads the Big 10 in passing touchdowns and is second in passing yardage.

Illinois rushing attack is led by Josh Fergusen who has 316 yards rushing and he has also caught 12 passes for a 10.4 yard average.

David Santos will probably not suit up this week due to some kind of a knee injury. Linebacker starters this week is Banderas, Roach, and Anderson.

This week's prediction:
Nebraska 31
Illinois 14

Nebraska vs. Miami!

This is to be the big home game of the year. Lots of tradition. That 1984 game for the national championship was the best game between these two powerful teams. Tom Osborne went for two and Nebraska failed losing by one point, Miami 31 Nebraska 30..

The !995 Orange Bowl was won by Nebraska 24, Miami 17. Nebraska won the national championship and Warren Sapp went home a loser.

And then there was Solich's team that lost 37 to 14 in the 2002 Rose Bowl. 38 players from that Miami team was drafted. The average winning margin of that team (Miami) was over 33 points.

Now we play again. Both teams are trying to get back in the nationa picture again after a few down years. Nebraska is pretty good but they can play poorly like they did against McNeese St.

Nebraska lost a couple of key players this week. Sam Burtch just come back to shore up the receivers and had a season ending leg injury and Mauro Bondi had a motorcycle accident and broke his collarbone. He has been key in kicking the ball deep enough into the endzone that opposing teams could not return for yardage.

Nebraska should be fired up although these kids don't know the rivalry. But the fans do so the crowd should be electric.

Miami has speed. They aren't that bad of a team.

Nebraska 31
Miami 30

Look to Northern Illinois to knock off Arkansas this week. Always good to see an SEC team get beat.
Also Central Michigan will knock off Kansas. Since the firing of Turner Gill, Kansas has been terrible.
