Best Sporting Event I EVER ATTENDED!

Ok, I went to the LSU-Nebraska football game when Nebraska won their first National Championship. Nerbaska was rated third but the two teams, Ohio State and Notre Dame, rated ahead of Nebraska were beaten that day. Nebraska won 17-12. Goosebumps!

I saw the Alex Henery 57 yard field goal to beat Colorado when we were beaten. Goosebumps!

I missed the Hail Mary pass this year against Northwestern (saw it on TV) and I wasn't in Columbia for the "Miracle Catch" (saw on TV also).

I have seen many college football games and college basketball games. I was at Creighton's last game this year when Greg McDermott hit 45 and had 3000 career points. It was on Senior Night to boot. Goosebumps!

I saw Nebraska in the stand all game" victory over Wisconsin to allow them to go to the NCAA tournament. Goosebumps!

I have boxes of tickets f events I have attended including a Women's Pro Tennis Tournament in Philadelphia. I have been to the Indy 500 and many Nascar races including the Brickyard, Richmond, Martinsville, and Phoenix. A couple of years ago I attended the race at Daytona.

Saturday night I attended the best of them all. Why? Well let's see.

The event was the WBO Lightweight Championship fight at the CenturyLink in Omaha. I attended with my brother Michael. The even took place because of Terrance "Bud" Crawford who is the world's champion. He gave up part of his purse to have it in Omaha. They wanted Council Bluffs or somewhere else.

I have been following the guy who wore a Nebraska cap in the ring on national tv a few years back. I kept watching him every chance he was on tv. This kid was good. He was Muhammed Ali in the Lightweight division. He was fun to watch. He was dang good. And he was the first kid from Nebraska that was in the national spotlight in boxing since Ron Stander in the early 70's.

Crawford has a quiet confidence and he looks like a good guy. He's a winner and he's fun to watch.

Crawford fought a very tough opponent in Yuriorkis Gamboa. His promoter is "50 Cent" Jackson who led him to the ring. Gamboa was 23-0 with 16 knockouts which was identical to Crawford.  Gamboa was a gold medal winner at the Olympics. Gamboa was pretty darn good.

What made this event the best?

1. World Championship fight!
2. Michael Buffer was the ring announcer and he is more electric that I even imagined. Wow, he is amazing. I think he like the crowd in Omaha a lot.
3. Ring girls! They were amazing and so fun to watch. Enough said.
4. The crowd!!  Boxing crowds have a mixture of a number of nationalities. Most of these fans are so excited and vocal and animated. 11,000 fans like this is equal to 80,000 fans at a Nebraska football game. I am white and I am a pretty boring fan compared to this crowd. They grow on you also and I found myself having fun and yelling and having a good time. If I acted like that at a Nebraska football or basketball game I might have to take a breathalyzer. We need more of this crowd at the NU games. Anyway to explain why it was the best it was because the fans were having so so much fun!
5. Terrance Crawford. The BEST! He's going to put Omaha and Nebraska on the map!!

Can't wait to see his next move.

I think Omaha will have another fight in the near future but it won't be very easy to get tickets like we had this time. Every fight fan will want to go next time. Just so much fun and MAJOR GOOSEBUMPS!

NU Honored as Regional Staff of the Year

NU Honored as Regional Staff of the Year

Bucket list item this Saturday!

OK, so one of my bucket list items has been to attend a boxing world championship. Well, it just happens that we have this opportunity this weekend and it only comes along every fourty years in Nebraska.

Saturday night we have the WBO Lightweight Championship at the Century Link in Omaha Nebraska!! How fun is that. There is four fights scheduled on HBO that night.

Main event:
Terrance Crawford 23-0 with 16 knockouts fights Youiorkis Gamboa who has an identical record of 23-0 with 16 knockouts for the WBO Champonship in a 12 round fight. Crawford is from Omaha and he usually has on some Nebraska Cornhusker attire before every fight. He reminds me of Muhammed Ali in his boxing style. He is very entertaining.

Gamboa is from Cuba and now lives in Florida. He is the former WBA and IBF Featherweight Champion.

The second main fight of the night also features undefeated boxers for 10 rounds. This fight is for the WBO Inter-Continental Middleweight title.

Matt Korobov is 23-0 with 14 knockouts. He is from Russia and now lives in Florida. Korobov represented Russia in the 2008 Olympics and turned professional in 2008.

Korobov goes against Jose Uzcategul who is 23-0 with 18 knockouts. Uzcategul was born in Venezuela and now lives in Mexico. He goes by the name Bolivita.

In a welterweight fight, Mikael Zewski 23-0 with 18 knockouts fights Prince Doku Jr. 9-4. Zewski is from Canada and Doku, known as "too hot", is from Ghana.

The fourth main fight of the night and one that is also to be on HBO as the previous three is Koustantiu Ponomarez 17-1 vs. Hextor Munoz 21-10-1 and 14 knockouts. Ponomarez is from Russia. Munoz is known as "The Hurricane" and his claim to fame was beating Hector "Macho" Comacho.

Some of the undercard fights should be interesting.

Johnny Determan, who is 23 years old, was born in Omaha but now lives in Texas.  He is 7-0 with six coming from knockouts. He fights Ernie Marquez who is 9-13-2 with 3 knockouts. His last seven opponents have a combined record of 125-7-4. This could be an interesting fight. This is a six round bantamweight division fight.

Jovany Fuentes  5-4 with 4 knockouts fights Victor Pasillas 7-0 with 3 knockouts in a 6 round bantamweight fight. Fuentes is from Puerto Rico.

Guillermo Sanchez 13-12-1 with five knockouts goes six rounds with Casey Ramos (No Record) in a six round Super Featherweight fight.

Bernard Davis from Omaha 1-0 goes against Bryan Timmons (Wichita) 1-1 in a four round featherweight fight.

I believe the first fight of the night will be Ronnie Peterson 2-6-1 with 3 knockouts going against Cody Crowley (Canada) in his Pro debut in a four round Super Welterweight fight.

I can't wait. I think tickets are still available. It will be worth it!!

Sport Shorts!

TCU beat Texas Tech today 3-2 in the College World Series. One point of interest is that TCU has the best ERA in the nation at 2.19. Prior to today's game the Frogs' bullpen has given up only two runs in 28 1/3 innings.

I like Vanderbilt and Virginia to head the field although who really knows what will happen. I pick mainly on the fact that they seem to be doing well and have beaten some pretty good teams. That's it.

Martin Kaymer led from start to finish in the US Open and won by eight strokes. Impressive but I lost a little interest when the lead was so much.

Casey Kasem died at the age of 82. I listened to his program and loved it for many years.

San Antonio wins the NBA Championship in five games!! A surprise to many but the best TEAM! They make it the game look very fluid. Now can we get off of comparing the Heat to Michael Jordan's Bulls. Not even close.

Vince Young has retired and has joined the Texas Longhorns staff.

Jimmie Johnson wins again at Michigan today. Rookie Kyle Larson had an accident and a speeding penalty and still was in the Top 10. Impressive. Kyle Busch and Kasey Kahne have a silent feud going and the question is "When will it erupt?"

Danica Patrick was 17th today and is having her best finishes lately.

OK, get ready for fantasy football soon. Cam Newton is a hot item in some of the magazines.

The Spurs, Lakers, and Heat have combined to win 13 of the last 16 championships.

The Kansas City Royals won again today 6-3 and the Cubs shut out the Phillies. The Royals have won seven straight.

New hot recruit!

Nebraska's offense just got more explosive! This guypposed to be really good and he has a cool name. Damore'ea Stringfellow has transferred to the Nebraska football team. Stringfellow just finished his freshman year at Washington. Stringfellow is 6-3 and 225 lbs. Stringfellow almost went with the Huskers backin 2012.

Stringfellow comes from the same high school in California as Quincy Enunwa and Eric Martin. Stringfellow caught 20 passes for 259 yards at Washington and against UCLA he had eight catches for 147 yards and a touchdown.

Stringfellow was the number 12 receiver in the country coming out of high school.

He will need to sit out the 2014 season.

Today at noon Nebraska gets to play Cal State Fullerton agai! Bummer will be pitching and NU has a great chance to win and redeem their opening loss. Lose now and we are done for the season.

Spurs beat Oklahoma City so we have a San Antonio-Miami final in the NBA. Should be interesting!
