Baseball is near!

Baseball is coming soon. The Nebraska Cornhuskers open play at Bakersfield/California on February 15th. NU plays 18 games against 2012 NCAA tourament teams.

Leading off for the Huskers will be Sophomore second baseman Pat Kelly. Kelly batted .313 last year as a freshman. He had eight homers and 37 RBI's. He was second team All-Big-10 and a Freshman All-American. He played shortstop last year but is back to second base with Chad Christensen back after an injury.

With only two scholarship upperclassman this fall at safety, Nebraska needs some freshman to step up. Corey Cooper and Harvey Jackson are the only two safeties that are other than a freshman.

Drake Martinez, who is Taylor's brother, may get some playing time if he can learn the system quickly. He is 6'2" and 200 lbs. and he is fast. He will be one of the fastest players on the team. He runs a 4.4 40 yards dash.

This past year of recruiting in the Big 10 was interesting. Ohio had 53 players that received scholarships. Next was Illinois with 28, followed by Florida with 24. Ohio has 246 kids on scholarship in the Big 10. Florida has 144 and Illinois has 118.

Nebraska had two scholarship players in the 2013 class and has 14 overall.

By the way Michigan is fourth in total scholarships in the Big 10  with 104, Texas is next with 83.

This year NU took four kids from California, three each from Texas, Ohio, and Florida. There are 23 kids on scholarship on the entire team from Texas, seventeen from California, and eleven from Nebraska.
