I May Be Wrong

Dick Becker was a writer for the Lincoln Evening Journal back on May 13, 1955 when he wrote about four Nebraska football players lost their scholarships when they were involved in a panty raid. Something that back in my days of college (1972-1975) was considered an innocent prank. I never was involved in one of these but besides some embarrassment for those involved, it wasn't considered an offense that a football player would lose his scholarship. There were also three non-scholarship athletes who were suspended along with the other four. One was baseball, one track, and the 8other football.

One of the players was going to be a starting tackle in the fall(Jerry Peterson, Cambridge) and the second team quarterback(Charley Smith) was also involved.

In the final words of his column he says, "New officials will be forced to screen the high school athletes even closer. Losing four scholarship boys due to the panty raid meant a loss of at least $4,000 to the Athletic Department.  Funds are being guarded too zealously to allow this sort of thing to be repeated in the future."

I |May Be Wrong but would Andy Janovich from Gretna be an All Big 10 linebacker now if he had started on defense. Great athlete that we have never utilized enough.

I hoping Noah Fant goes NU for football. His top four teams are Nebraska, Iowa, Iowa St., and Vanderbilt. Nebraska wants him to be a defensive end. He has the size but he will need to get stronger. Fant is from Omaha South and I visited with him and his dad at a NU football game last fall.

Bleacher says Ameer Abdullah will beat out Joique Bell and Theo Riddick to start for the Detroit Lions this fall. Go Ameer!

LeBron James hit a last second shot and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Chicago Bulls 86-84. Clippers went up 3-1 against Houston tonight.

Randy Gregory was back at practice today.

Doug McDermott did not play today for the Bulls.
