LUKE PINKELMAN

Cozad defeated Class B #6 Scottsbluff on Friday to go 2-0. Cozad is for real in Class B and one of the main reasons is Luke Pinkelman. Pinkelman plays offensive guard. At the Colorado St. football camp this summer he impressed their coaches. Many colleges are watching his progress this season.

Pinkelman also is a great shot putter. He won the Kansas Relays this spring with a throw of over 62'. He is talented to the level where he may be a two-sport participant at whatever college he attends.

Luke is 6'3" and weighs 275 lbs. He benches 410 and squats 530 lbs. He has ran the 40 in 5.07 and has a vertical jump of 27 inches. Luke has broke some of Chris Dishman's lifting records at Cozad.

In addition to Pinkelman, Nebraska commit Jared Crick and standout Eric Love also play for Cozad.

ALEX STOVER

The Gretna High School Dragons had a player verbally commit to a Division I school this week. He is Alex Stover, a standout offensive/defensive lineman and he will be playing for the Wyoming Cowboys next year. Alex is a three year starter on both offense and defense for Gretna. Alex plays guard and tackle on offense and noseguard and tackle on defense.

The 6'2" 260 lb. star will play in the defensive line for the Cowboys. He likes defense because it is more aggresive. Wyoming was attractive because it he likes to fish and hunt and he really likes the campus.

Alex benches 295 lbs. and squats 450 lbs. He has a vertical jump of 27". He ran a 4.87 at the Nebraska camp this summer.

Alex is one of five returning starting linemen for Gretna this year and they have high hopes to go a long way in the playoffs. He is a returning all-stater in Class B.

NOAH KELLER

Class A top ranked Kearney has two outstanding linebackers that are as good as pair in high school football in Nebraska this year. One is Joey Rousseau. The other is Noah Keller. Scout.com says this about Noah. "Keller ranks as the top linebacker prospect in Nebraska in 2006. As a junior, in nine games, he recorded 121 tackles (48 solo), 10 tackles for loss, two sacks, and one interception. "

Noah is 6'1" and weighs 225 lbs. He benches 330 lbs and squats 600 lbs. He runs the 40 in 4.6 and has a vertical jump of 37 inches. Allen Bradford, the five-star recruit that went to USC in the 2006 recruiting class, had a vertical jump of 29 inches.

In 2005, Keller had 306 yards rushing as a fullback and 147 yards receiving. Keller and Rousseau both can become Kearney's all-time tackler with app 100 tackles this year. They were tied at the beginning of the year.

As a junior Keller won the all-class gold medal with a throw of 62' 31/4" at the Nebraska State Track meet.

Sports shorts

Former Husker Drew Anderson, of Kearney, has now played in 13 games with AAA Nashville. He is batting 301 with three doubles, one triple, five RBIs, and 12 runs.

Alex Gordon is batting 325 with 29 HRs and 97 RBIs.

Ben Roethlisberger had an emergency appendectomy and will miss the opener. He was not wearing a helmut during the surgery.

Doc Sadler's brother Pedro has said that the NU practices will be unlike any we have seen before. Most of the practices will be open to the public.

The NFL season starts in three days.

Who is the best running back for NU? They are all good. Brandon Jackson had the run of the day on his touchdown. Kenny Wilson had a great run for a TD but it was called back. Glenn ran really well shoeing power and speed. Marlon Lucky showed a lot of power vs last year.

The offensive line seemed to work best when Nicks, Slauson, Patrick, Austin, Huff, Christensen, and Mann were in the rotation. They are improved this year.

The loss of Philip Dillard will be felt. He was having a sensational game before his injury. With his loss, Lance Bradenburgh moves over to back up McKeon at middle linebacker and Clayton Sievers moves behind Stewart Bradley. Sievers played tight end Saturday also.

With the loss of Isaiah Fluellen, backup to Cortney Grisby, Titus Brother or Corey Young or Anthony West will need to stepup to a backup roll. Corey Young is a true freshman from Millard North. Anthony West is also a true Freshman. Seems like we have ten receivers that are excellent but the secondary backups are good but young.

There is celebration in Orleans, Beaver City, and Oxford as Southern Valley beat Cambridge 21-0. This is the first time since they consolidated in 1995.

Ratings here are: Class A #1 Lincoln Southwest #2 Millard South #3 Omaha Westside #4 Millard North #5 Kearney

Class B #1 Omaha Skutt #2 Elkhorn #3 McCook

The Kansas City Royals are now competitive and fun to watch.

One last race to the Chase. Kasey Kayne is only 30 points from the top ten. The next race is Richmond Saturday night. What a track for the final race. Anything can happen.

Surprise College football scores.......Montana State 19 Colorado 10...Rutgers 21 North Carolina 16 Joe Dailey actually had a good game hitting 67% of his passes for 234 yards and one touchdown. He had two interceptions but the last one on the final drive was caused by the receiver not continuing his pattern. ............Oklahoma 24 UAB 17......Kansas State 24 Illinois State 23 Josh Freeman did not play ........Iowa State 45 Toledo 43

Nebraska High School football

Jake Gdowski who attended the Nebraska game said that Jim Ebke of Lincoln East was "an impressive player". Ebke threw for 180 yards and three toughdowns and had 98 yards rushing and a touchdown in the 35-7 win over Grand Island.

Lincoln Southwest, who this writer rates #1 in Class A, was led by Austin Cassidy who ran for 219 yards from his QB position.

Jordon Langer of Lincoln Christian had 329 yards rushing and five touchdowns. Casey Hauptman of Millards North had 257 yards passing and two touchdowns. Yes, Coach Fred Petito must be passing more this year. Tyler Vandament, from Bellevue West had 170 yards receiving and three touchdowns. Tyler's grandparents are from Holdrege. Niles Paul, the Husker recruit, had 165 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

Surprise scores of the week.......C-2 #10 Amherst 0 Ravenna 41 Class B #1 Beatrice 13-#4Elkhorn 28 8 Man-2 #4 Falls City SH 32 NC Lourdes 50

Lincoln Southwest plays Lincoln Southeast this week. Standouts Ollie Sloup and Austin Cassidy will lead the favorite Southwest team against SE.

Elkhorn plays at Gretna this week in a game that means a lot every year in Class B. Lineman Alex Stover leads Gretna this year. Kevin Thomsen of Elkhorn has had offers from Wyoming and Colorado State.

In C-1 #10 Auburn plays Ashland-Greenwood who is rated 7th in a big game. Two-time 1000 yard rusher Luke Lundy plays for Auburn.

Kearney Catholic plays Hastings St Cecelia. Kearney Catholic is rated #8. Clay Center goes to #2 in EM-1 Bruning-Davenport. Clay Center is #1 in EM-2. Bruning-Davenport is the returning champion and has Cory Voss, a linebacker, and Preston Lentler, a lineman, who are standouts.

Also in EM-2 action, Mullen plays at #6 Sargent. Jacob Davenport had 39 TD's and 2,314 yards rushing in 2005. They also have LB Ian Cox who is a defensive standout.

Go to a game and enjoy!!!!!

Tunnel Walk

Saturday's game began with a pregame ceremony that included the display of a large "Power of Red" banner and the performance of "God Bless the USA" by grammy award-winning artist Lee Greenwood before the Huskers took the Tunnel Walk onto the field from North Stadium for the first time since the 1973 season. This writer found the salute to the armed forces who have given their lives or have placed their lives in harms way very emotional. One person said "Am I in heaven" as Lee Greenwood sang.

Before the first tunnel walk, on the new HuskerVision big screen was the appearance of legendary broadcaster Keith Jackson, who whipped the crowd into a frenzy by stating there was no place better to be than Memorial Stadium on a college football Saturday. Two national guard members who were in Iraq opened the "door" to the tunnel as the Cornhuskers entered the field.

This writer was in the new North Stadium where his seats are in section 40 row 86. The new big screen was easy to see which was a concern before the game. The view of the game was great. The crowd was great. The players played great for a first game.

The only negative that could be said about the new North Stadium was the distance to the exit to get to and from your seat. It takes a little more time but it is manageable.

The whole event was an "experience" that many are looking forward to again this Saturday against Nicholls State.

What are your comments as to the pre-game and the new addition?

Nebraska gets their 10th commit

Quentin Castille, a running back from LaPorte, Texas, commited to Nebraska today. According to Rivals.com, he had favored Nebraska before the visit and was very impressed during the visit. He is a 6' 1" 234 lb running back. Nebraska plans to take one more back this year.

Wild and Crazy predictions for the game today!

Be ready for some real surprises today!

We are supposed to be in our seats today for something special. Here is my vision for something special. With the new north endzone there will be excitement today. As the Tunnel Walk begins you will see the players come through the walk going crazy and the crowd ignites. Red smoke filters through the air as the players to get close to the northwest part of the field. As the smoke is blinding, out comes Bill Callahan leading the Huskers on to the field. To the Coach's right is Larry The Cable Guy in a four wheeler holding a Nebraska flag. To his left is Taylor Hicks, the winner of America Idol, running and bobbing to his left. Right behind the Coach is Shakira in a skimpy red outfit. The crowd erupts and cheers for 37 minutes as the game is delayed. Finally Larry The Cable Guy talks in the loud speaker and says "Now that was fun right there, I don't care what you say! Go Huskers!" The crowd gives a standing ovation for 18 more minutes during which time Taylor Hicks and Shakira dance and wiggle around and arouse the crowd. Taylor Hicks sings the National Athem with Shakira with Shakira mostly dancing.

Highlights of the game include 8 sacks by half time with Adam Carriker having four. Kenny Wilson runs the ball on the last play of the first half. He breaks tackles to get from the 22 yard line down to the one. He stops runs backs the other way 20 yards and them runs back through the endzone breaking a total of 29 tackles.

Maurice Purify catches three passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns. Nebraska rushes most of the day and piles up over 300 yards in rushing but the defensive players are the heroes.

Nebraska 57-7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Buffalo wins first game with Turner Gill at the helm

Buffalo beat Temple tonight for their first game of the season. They won 9-3 in overtime. Buffalo was 1-10 last year with their win against Kent State 10-7. This was Turner Gill's first game as head coach.

    Four official visitors this week!

Four players will be taking their official visits this weekend when Nebraska plays Louisiana Tech.
They are Quentin Castillo, a fullback from LaPorte, Texas. He is rated a three-star by Rivals.com. Roy Helu is a running back from Danville, California. He has a three-star rating.

Brandon Herron is visiting this week. He is an outside linebacker from Sugarland, Texas. He has a three-star rating. Rivals says there is a good chance he will commit this week. The fourth visitor has already commited to NU. He is Ryan Hill, a tight end from Arvada, Colorado. Ryan does not have a rating yet.

Why even look at running backs? Wilson and Jackson are gone after 2007 and there are those that think Lucky will enter the draft after 2007. All the sudden we are down to Glenn who will be a senior in 2008. We need more running backs.

    Wednesday, August 30, 2006

Three days to the first game!

Nebraska will do well on Saturday. The offense will have a great day against a defense that only returns two starters. The running back that plays will simply be the one that does his assignments, pass blocks and doesn't turn the ball over. If one of the backs fumble they may have to sit for a while. It should be fun. I have to admit I can't wait for Kenny Wilson to run the ball but all the backs are very good.

I am anxious to see the receivers. Maurice Purify has been reported to be a great receiver but he is still learning the system. Never-the-less it will be fun to watch our talented receivers.

The offensive line will be improved and we will see different starters each week. It is very competitive and this should raise the level of our performance.

The defense will be very good. The test will be how Shanle, Jones, and Green react to their first starts. Which backup will energe as a potential starter. There will be many opinions as to which backup should be playing more. All too much fun and a chance to have discussions with friends as to what we should be doing differently.

My prediction for the NE game as per an earlier log is NU 57-7.

Now on to other things.....Joe Dailey starts for North Carolina Saturday against Rutgers. Rudy Carpenter starts for Arizona State on Thursday night. Coach Del Koetter has a lot of pressure he has a good healthy season. Buffalo opens against Temple on Thursday night and they are favored. It will all be fun to follow.

Everybody will have an opinion and you will hear this writer's views as the season goes.

This week is Week 1 for High School football. Go out and see a game and let me know if you see a standout player. We will follow them during the season. There are a lot of great players in Nebraska who are relatively unknown and it is our duty to report on them.

The following is for games on September 8th.

Lincoln Southwest plays Lincoln Southeast this week. Standouts Ollie Sloup and Austin Cassidy will lead the favorite Southwest team against SE who lost to Lincoln East last week 21-14 in a mild upset.

IClay Center goes to #2 in EM-1 Bruning-Davenport.

    Get ready to tailgate!!!

Check out http://www.barbecuebible.com/ for your tailgating needs. One recipe on their site is:
    First Timer’s Ribs

spacer spacer EXCERPTED FROM spacer spacer
    spacer Buy it! spacer
    spacer BUY IT spacer
    spacer

Well, if this is your idea of the perfect rib (and it should be), here’s your master recipe. It will teach you the principles of first-class ribsmanship – skinning the ribs, rubbing the meat, using a mop sauce, glazing with a barbecue sauce, and harnessing the mouth-watering powers of wood smoke. But ultimately, it’s so simple you can prepare it from start to finish in about an hour and a half, only ten minutes of which is actual work.

    For the mop sauce:
    3 tablespoons unsalted butter
    1 cup apple cider
3 tablespoons bourbon, or 3 more tablespoons apple cider
    3 tablespoons soy sauce

    For the rub and ribs:
2 tablespoons coarse salt (kosher or sea)
    2 tablespoons brown sugar
    2 tablespoons sweet paprika
1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper
2 teaspoons dry mustard (preferably Colman’s)
    2 teaspoons garlic powder
    ½ teaspoon celery seed
2 racks baby back pork ribs (4 to 5 pounds total)
Lemon Brown Sugar Barbecue Sauce or another favorite barbecue sauce

    You’ll also need:
1 ½ cups wood chips or chunks (preferably hickory or apple), soaked for 1 hour in water to cover, then drained
    barbecue mop

    1. Make the mop sauce: Melt the butter in a nonreactive saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the cider, bourbon, and soy sauce. Keep warm until ready to use.

    2. Make the rub: Place the salt, brown sugar, paprika, pepper, mustrad, garlic powder, and celery seed in a small bowl and mix with your fingers, breaking up any lumps in the brown sugar or garlic powder.

    3. Prepare the ribs: Place a rack of ribs meat side down on a baking sheet. Remove the thin, papery membrane from the back of the rack by inserting a slender implement, such as a butter knife or the tip of a meat thermometer, under it. The best place to start is on one of the middle bones. Using a dishcloth, paper towel, or pliers to gain a secure grip, peel off the membrane. Repeat with the remaining rack.

    4. Set aside 2 tablespoon of rub for serving. Sprinkle the remaining rub over both sides of the ribs, rubbing it onto the meat. Cover the ribs with plastic wrap and refrigerate them while you set up the grill.

    5. Set up the grill for indirect grilling (see page 33) and preheat to medium (325 to 350F). Place a large drip pan in the center of the grill under the grate. (For instructions on smoking on a gas grill see page 36.)

    6. When ready to cook, brush and oil the grill grate. Place the ribs bone side down in the center of the grate, over the drip pan and away from the head. (If your grill has limited space, stand the racks of ribs upright in a rib rack; see page 52.) If cooking on a charcoal grill, toss half of the wood chips on each mound of coals. Cover the grill and cook the ribs for 45 minutes.

    7. Mop the ribs on both sides with the mop sauce. Re-cover the grill and continue cooking the ribs until well browned, cooked through, and tender enough to pull apart with your fingers, 45 minutes to 1 hour longer, 1 ¼ to 1 ½ hours in all. When the ribs are cooked, the meat will have shrunk back from the ends of the bones by about ¼ inch. Mop the ribs again every 15 minutes and, if using a charcoal grill, replenish the coals as needed.

    8. Just before serving, brush the ribs on both sides with some of the Lemon Brown Sugar Barbecue Sauce and move them directly over the fire. Grill the ribs until the barbecue sauce is browned and bubbling, 1 to 3 minutes per side.

    9. Transfer the ribs to a large platter or cutting board. Let the ribs rest for a few minutes, then cut the racks in half or into individual ribs. Sprinkle a little of the reserved rub over the ribs and serve at once with the remaining barbecue sauce on the side.

In the first quarter, two-time all-stater Lance Thorell ran for 20 yards for the first score of the season for Loomis. Later in the first half Thorell ran for a 30 yard TD. A.J. Lindstrom ran in for the two-point conversion bringing the score to 16-0. With a little over six minutes left in the second quarter, Devon Carmichael 60 yards for a TD followed by the two-pointer which was a pass from Lindstrom to Thorell. The score ended 24-0 at half.

With thirteen minutes left in the third quarter, Thorell ran 68 yards for a TD and Devon Carmichael ran the two-point conversion bringing the score to 32-0. Then Eustis-Farnam got on the board with a pass from Jeff Loshonkohl to Calvin Rupe. Randy Sheffield caught a pass from Loshonkohl for the two pointer. This brought the score to 32-8.

With eleven minutes left in the game Thorell scored his fourth TD from 2 yards out. The two-pointer failed. Score 38-8. With five minutes left Eusti-Farnam scored the final points of the game with Loshonkohl scoreing from three yards out. Final 38-14.

Loomis had an impressive running game. Their passing game was not needed tonight but was ineffective most of the time when they did pass. Loomis will also need to work on its punting game as they punted only two or three times and one was blocked.

Eustis-Farnam had a lot of yards on offense tonight but they were unable to put the ball in the end zone enough times. They will win some games this year.

BRAD HARTZOG, FORMALLY OF ORLEANS, MADE SOME KEY CALLS IN THIS GAME AND DID A TREMENDOUS JOB AS A REFEREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great football night. The season begins!!

Lance Thorell-One of the Top 15 Football Players in Nebraska-2006

Lance Thorell, a senior at Loomis High School, is relatively an unknown except for the schools that have played against him. Coach Grant Mollring of Eustis-Farnam was quoted this week in the Kearney Hub "and the best athlete west of Kearney, in my opinion, is Thorell". Eustis-Farnam plays Loomis this week in D-1 action.

Thorell has excelled in football, basketball, and track at Loomis High during his career. He played on the D-2 championship basketball team three years ago. He had top five performances in Nebraska in the 110 highs and the intermediate hurdles.

He is a two time all-stater in football. Last year he had 101 tackles and eight interceptions. Coach Denis Reese has put him in a position where he can help the team the most. His sophmore year he played receiver on offense and had a great year with all-stater Drew Billeter throwing TD's to him. Last year he played QB. This year he converts to running back. He will be tough to stop and should have a sensational season.

His strongest positions in college looks to be receiver and safety. He has excellent speed, great hands, and is a very tough hard hitter on defense.

Lance is 6'1" and weighs 180 lbs. He benches 245 lbs. and squats 315 lbs. His 40 time is 4.6 and he has a 33 inch vertical jump. His best season in receiving was in 2004 when he had 914 yards receiving and 14 TD's.

Lance will excel whereever he plays and would be a great walkon for the Nebraska program.

This year the word will get out how good he really is. Watch his progress this season.

Eleven Days until the first game

Brandon "Beast" Johnson is practicing this week for the first time. He appears to be living up to his name and will probably contribute in the USC game. He is the real deal.

That gives us three players this writer feels are the "real deal". They are "The Beast", Maurice Purify, and Kenny Wilson. They will be huge contributors this year and will play eventually in the NFL.

Here are the facts about Sam Keller. He has asked to be released at Arizona State. Nebrasks has said they are recruiting him. Coach Callahan said it is his job to bring the best players to Nebraska to elevate the competition and talent level. Sam Keller was elected captain by his team.

Now the part that has been reported and some speculation. Rudy Carpenter is the starting QB at Arizona State. He went 4-1 after Keller was hurt last year. Last week their Coach Koetter named Keller the starting QB for ASU. Carpenter said he would transfer if Koetter didn't name him QB. This left Koetter without a quality QB for 2007 so he then named Carpenter the starting QB. Keller decided to transfer. He doesn't appear to have problems with the other players because he was named captain. Koetter now says he messed up.

Keller would be a nice fit for Nebraska next year as he will be ahead of the other QB's. He has been projected to be a 1st or 2nd round draft pick. He would add 2 to 3 victories for Nebraska next year if we get him. I would say it is a 70% chance we will get him as his dad has some ties to Coach Callahan. He will make the other QB's better also. That's what it is all about.

    Husker practice

Dontrel Moore, a linebacker, has left the Nebraska football team.

Isiah Fluellen is working with the No. 1 team at CB. Andre Jones should be back on Monday after having a hamstring pull. Fluellen is one of the fastest kids on the team. He had played WR up until this year.

Ben Eisenhart, from Culbertson, may be a nickel back at times this year. He is know as a huge hitter.

Less than two weeks until the first game.

Demorrio Williams had 8 tackles Saturday night for Atlanta. Kyle Larson had 5 punts for a 47.2 yard average for Cinncy. Willie Amos had three tackles for the Bears. Mike Rucker ran a fumble back for a TD.

NU BB Coach Sadler said that he has not heard from Marcus Walker as to whether he has decided to come back to Nebraska.

    Fun Day for Nebraska Football

The day included Larry The Cable Guy telling jokes and the football secretaries calling plays. It was a change of pace from many hard practices this fall. Sarah Boehler is pictured with Joni Duff as they are calling defensive plays with Coach Cosgrove's assistance.

Last night Correll Buckhalter ran five times for eight yards and caught one pass for 48 yards for the Eagles. Sam Koch had four punts for a 39.8 yard average. Bernard Thomas had a solo tackle. Corey Ross ran seven times for twenty-two yards. He also had one punt return for twenty yards. They all play for Baltimore.

Doc Sadler gets two more basketball players from last year's team to rejoin. They are Kansas City product Marcus Walker and Mike Smith. He has now been able to keep thirteen scholarship players from last year's team.

"Talledaga Nights" is a great show!! Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly really click off together. Amy Adams is very good too. The two kids are unbelieveable. Lots of laughs and one you want to see again!!!

Zac Taylor will have an excellent chance to break the 433 yards passing he had last year against Iowa State. He also should break the total offensive yards in a game for a senior which is held by Eric Crouch vs. Colorado in 2001 of 360 yards.

Johnny Rodgers record of 55 receptions in a season in 1972 could get broken if any of the receivers can get enough time to do so. We have an excellent bunch of receivers this year.

Kenny Wilson may be the best back we have seen since Ahman Green and Lawrence Phillips. He is the real deal.

Nebraska's last year in the top ten was 2001 when they were ranked 7th. They were ranked 7th in 2000 and 2nd in 1999.

The offensive line will be back this year and they have depth to boot.

The Nebraska attendance record is 78,268 against Texas in 2002. The record will be broken on September 2nd.

The largest crowd ever to see a Nebraska game was at Penn State on Sept. 14, 2002. Nebraska got beat 40-7.

Mike Rozier had 26 games of 100 yards or more rushing.

The first game is against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and the second game is the Nicholls State Colonels out of Thibadaux, Louisiana. Louisiana Tech is located in Ruston, Louisiana.

Maric and White will return to NU Basketball

Doc Sadler has traveled to Australia and New York to discuss and persuade Alex Maric and Jamel White to remain Cornhuskers. They are the two leading returning scorers. This is great news for Nebraska basketball.

Larry The Cable Guy was at football practice this morning. Go to Rivals to hear his interview. Quite funny.

Yesterday Kenny Wilson and Brandon Jackson broke touchdowns of over 60 yards. All four backs are performing well which means the offensive line is doing well also.

Maurice Purify is working with the first team.

Look for a Matt Kenseth, Kurt Busch, and Denny Hamlin finish this week at Michigan.

Alex Gordon has 24 home runs this season at Wichita. He will remain there until the season ends.

    NBC COVERAGE OF NASCAR STINKS

This writer just has to say that the coverage of the Nascar races by NBC are really bad. Numerous times there has been a driver go out of a race for a number of laps and they never mention it. We are not talking Chaffin or Ash but drivers like Kahne and Hamlin. The announcers do fine. This writer hope Benny Parson has a healthy recovery.Pitcommand on nascar.com has better coverage than watching NBC. Don't they have somebody watching a similar screen so they can pick up when somebody goes to the garage. What happened to Boris Said and Ron Fellows this week. They did not finish 6th and 11th as reported by NBC. They were 31st and 32nd.

When this writer said Jammal Lord is the toughest Nebraska Cornhusker I have ever seen, Brandon Rigoni is the most inspirational player we've seen in a few years. What fun it is to watch him on special teams. Big man in a smaller package.

This week's predictions of Stewart first, Harvick second and Martin third were pretty close with Harvick first and Stewart second.

    Corey Ross/Sam Koch/Jammal Lord

Two former Huskers played for Baltimore Friday. They were Sam Koch and Corey Ross. Sam Koch had 3 punts for an average of 33 yards.

Corey Ross had two punt returns for 27 yards which is a 13.5 yard average. He also was the leading kickoff returner with two returns for 44 yards.

Corey Ross had one rush for two yards and no receptions.

Remember two years ago when we couldn't find a punt returner at Nebraska? Those days are now gone.

Jammal Lord had three tackles for Indy in their game against St. Louis. Toughest NU player I have ever seen.

    Sports notes

The offensiveline is much improved according to Zac Taylor. Lydon Murtha and Chris Patrick have really improved. He also said that Carl Nicks, a new recruit has been impressive. DJ Jones, a new recruit said that he is running third team. He said that Myrtha and Matt Slauson are the ones he looks up to and watches. This is good news for Nebraska fans as we need Zac Taylor to stay healthy this year.

Kenny Wilson continues to impress at running back.

Harrison Beck goes to North Carolina State. Maybe Joe Dailey and Harrison Beck will face off next year. I'll pick Joe Dailey to win that battle.

KC Royals need a closer. They are blowing too many games in the ninth.

Recruit Ricky Thenarse has been cleared to practice. He will start at corner where Tyrell Spain is getting a shot.

Brian Hildebrand will begin practice on Saturday. Give him some time to learn the system. Joe Ganz will be fine as a backup.

Tony Stewart will win the road race this week. Watch for Mark Martin and Kevin Harvick to challenge.

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby is the #1 movie right now.

New book has John Boehler as detective

Robin T. Popp: Seduced by the Night

Seduced by the Night is the second book in Robin T. Popp’s Night Slayer series. Dirk Adams is a changeling; part vampire and part human. His strength and skills make him the ultimate fighter in the struggle against vampires in Washington, DC. Dirk works for Admiral Winslow, the retired officer introduced in Out of the Night. Dirk works with Mac Knight, another changeling as they try to track down the vampires the police have dubbed “the exsanguinators”.

The first book was much more interesting than this one. The Night Slayer series continues with Tempted in the Night and homicide detective John Boehler. Tempted will be released in early 2007.

"Doc" takes the Nebraska basketball job

Doc Stadler, coming from Texas El-Paso of the WAC conference, will be the Nebraska Basketball head coach. At first hearing of the announcement, this writer was less than enthusiastic. After doing some research he now has changed his mind and is anxious as to what kind of team he can put on the floor especially after Alex Maric announced he is leaving.

What is the deal with the name Doc. Sadler, whose given name is Kenneth, was nicknamed Doc because as a kid he wore a cap autographed by "Doc" on the TV western Gunsmoke. Being a fan of Gunsmoke things are looking even better.

What excited this writer about "Doc"? Continue to read on

Marc Boehm described the new coach. "One of the things that we have talked about is recruiting and how important it is here," Boehm said. "We have found a man who obviously is one of the best recruiters in the country, as he has coached 19 future NBA players. He has a tremendous track record, but his greatest quality may be his ability to build relationships with players, parents, coaches and fans. The people of Lincoln and Nebraska will love him."

Sadler led UTEP to 21 victories in 2005-06 and an NIT berth while overcoming several injuries that depleted the team of its top scorers for a majority of the season. Sadler's squad relied on defense and finished the campaign ranked 15th nationally by allowing only 59.5 points per game. His disciplined approach showed on the court as the Miners placed ninth nationally with only 14.9 fouls per game and ranked 28th in rebounding margin (+4.7) after outrebounding 24-of-31 opponents. With only two players left on the roster can "Doc" bring in some talent to help us rebound in the Big 12. That is a huge chore with little time.

The Miners went undefeated at home in league play and earned an 11-3 mark to rank third in the final standings. UTEP set a C-USA record by allowing just 56 points per game in conference play last year, and also allowed teams to hit just 40.6 percent from the floor on the year, the program's best mark since 1974.

While solid defense is a staple of his teams, Sadler understands the need to put creative scorers in a position to flourish. That was especially noticeable in his first UTEP team, as the 2005 Miners set the school record for points scored (2,616, 74.7 ppg), assists (579) and free throw percentage (.792). That should excite those that like to run and score. However it is obvious that defense is just as important.

"You ever watch tennis? We're going to play baseline to baseline," Sadler said. "I don't know how much the sideline seats sell for, but you better get baseline seats. Because if not, you're going to go home and the chiropractor is going to make a living." Thank goodness the students will be in these seats. This should get the crowd going when the plaers are giving 100% up and down the floor.

Sadler helped two players, Omar Thomas and Filberto Rivera, earn first-team All-WAC honors in 2005, the first time UTEP had a pair of players on the first squad in 20 years. Thomas also earned MVP honors after an outstanding performance at the league tournament. Last season, John Tofi, one of two 1,000-point scorers on the squad, was the third Miner to earn a first-team all-league certificate under Sadler.

The Miners have gained three straight postseason appearances with Sadler on the bench. Before taking over as head coach, Sadler was an assistant under current Texas A&M head coach Billy Gillespie in 2003-04 when the Miners made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in more than a decade. UTEP tied the biggest turnaround in NCAA history that season as it went from six to 24 wins in Sadler's first season assisting the Miners.

While considered by many to be a tremendous tactician and strategist, Sadler is equally as impressive on the recruiting paths. Sadler has signed eight players who have gone on to play in the NBA, including Michael Batiste, Tony Battie, Cory Carr, Mark Davis, Darvin Ham, Eddie House, Maurice Jeffers and Jason Sasser. Sadler has also coached 11 other players who reached the NBA -- Greg Anderson, Mario Bennett, Randy Brown, Isaac Burton, Byron Irvin, Joe Klein, Andrew Lang, Ron Riley, Alvin Robertson, Darrell Walker and Rickie Winslow – giving him an impressive total of 19 former pupils who reached the highest level of professional basketball.

Sadler has a passion for winning, but it is his ability to build relationships and then develop players both on and off the court that served him well during his 12 years as an assistant coach. Along with his NBA and all-conference picks, Sadler has seen his players succeed in the classroom, including 10 Miners on the 2005-06 team who earned at least a 3.0 grade-point average in the first semester.

As an assistant coach, Sadler served stints at seven current Division I schools, including Arkansas (1982-85, under Coach Eddie Sutton), Lamar (1985-86, under Coach Pat Foster), Houston (1986), Chicago State (1987-88, under Coach Tommy Suitts), Texas Tech (1991-94, under Coach James Dickey), Arizona State (1994-97, under Coach Bill Freider) and UTEP (2003-04, under Coach Billy Gillespie).

Over 12 full seasons as a Division I assistant coach, nine of his teams reached the postseason, including ASU's 1996 team that reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. At Texas Tech, Sadler helped the Red Raiders to the 1993 Southwest Conference title and an NCAA appearance. He recruited talent that helped the Red Raiders to a 28-1 record and a Sweet 16 appearance in 1996.

We will need to give "Doc" some time to heal the basketball team due to the player losses the last several months. Once the surgery is completed we will be happy with the results. Do you think our new mascot will be Festus or Matt Dillon. I'll be looking for Kitty.

NU begins search for Basketball Coach

The two main candidates, according to the press, to replace Barry Collier as Nebraska's basketball coach are not in the running. The successful Nevada coach, Mark Fox, met with Steve Pederson on Thursday and yesterday withdrew his name from consideration. He said he is happy in Nevada and has a strong loyalty to his players and the school.

It has also been reported that Jim Christian of Kent State also has dropped interest in the job.

The Omaha World-Herald has reported that Karl Hobbs of George Washington is interested in the job. He was coach of the year in the Atlantic Conference this year after going 27-3. If he was hired he would become the first African-American to be head coach at Nebraska. His coaching experience is impressive and was an assistant at Connecticut for 8 years.

Also showing interest is Randy Bennett of St. Mary's college in California. He has been at the college for six years and last year his team went 17-12. He was an assistant under Tim Floyd when he was in Idaho.

Two others mentioned for the job are John Pelphrey of South Alabama and Doc Stadler of UTEP.

    .........................

Jammal Lord has signed with Indianapolis as Safety. Yes Zac Taylor was hit hard a number of times in 2006 but Jammal Lord was as tough as any QB Nebraska has ever had.

Check out the article on Bart Kofoed by Dirk Chatelain today in the Omaha World-Herald. Great job!

The offensive line for Nebraska will be more experienced this year as most of the talent is back. Brandon Koch is a loss. Starters right now are Murtha, Austin, Mann, Slauson, and Patrick. They have shifted Slauson to play more guard this year. He is more fitted for that position in the NFL. Look to Andy Christensen to play a lot for Greg Austin who has a bad knee. Mike Huff will play and lot too. Recruit Carl Nicks is mentioned as the top second teamer. He is new on the team and should see a lot of playing time. The World-Heral article mentions that all the linemen are learning all of the line positions so you will see all kinds of combinations this year. Victory Haines, another first year player will see action also.

The Omaha Royals have no pitching right now. Kansas City needs a consistent closer or Burgos has to get better.

Why did she kiss him on the nose?

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY BARB

The rich get richer and the poor poorer!

That's what happens each year right at the major league trade deadline. The teams that don't have a chance to make the playoffs trade off their best players who have their contracts coming due. The poor teams figure that if they trade for a minor league player that has promise to contribute in the future, it is better than getting nothing at the end of the year if their best players sign with other teams. Free agency has contributed to this. Some teams that have a good chance to make the playoffs but are lacking a player or two make deals to get them better. The playoffs are good money. The Cubs trade off some of their better players because they really never have a reasonable chance to make the playoffs. It happens because of money for the players and the teams. The fans end up losers.

Something I have always wondered is "Can mute people burb?" It would appear that they can.

"Don't you think it is weird that we teach our children"Scrub a dub dub. Three men in a tub" Explain that one. Should this be stopped. What's a dub dub and are the three men scrubbing it?

When ball players wear t-shirts what does the t mean?

Who will be the starting running back when Nebraska plays Texas? I say Kenny Wilson. Of course we will use three or four backs extensively.

Do birds pee? Can a man named Nick have a nickname. Where did the term nickle back come from?

Can I ever go skinny-dipping when I weigh 280 lbs? Or is it fatty-dipping? You decide while you cry about those Cubs and why they traded off a couple of good players to help their competition.

Got to go for now. I have such a bad headache it isn't even funny. Of course having a headache should't be funny. But what is funny is trying to decide if a duck sneezes. Aren't little ducks as cute as a button. I just don't find buttons cute.

OK, see you later. What does OK stand for?

    Komine starts today

Former Nebraska sensation Shane Komine starts today for the Oakland A's. This will be his first major league start. He will face the Toronto Bluejays and Ray Halladay. Halladay is a former Cy Young award winner and has 13 wins. His last loss was 6/18. Komine has won six starts in a row at Sacramento with a .42 ERA during that time.

Alex Gordon is batting .310 and has 18 home runs with Wichita.

Steve Smith, of the NFL Carolina Panthers, has been rated the top receiver by a lot of Fantasy Football experts this year. He was carried off on a stretcher with a severe hamstring pull on the opening day of camp.

Brian Duensing got his first victory in AA for the New Britain Rock Cats. The former Husker gave up one run in five innings.

Eric Crouch did not play Saturday for the Toronto Argonauts.

Dan Bullocks signed with the Detroit Lions on Saturday. He has a reasonable chance to start this year.

Zac Taylor has given the Cornhuskers an advantage this year as being one of the few quarterbacks in the Big 12 that is experienced and a returning starter.

    Barb falls in love

Friday night in Orleans Nebraska, it came down to Barb Hartzog and Mrs. Nebraska as to who would kiss the pig. Barb known as the "Princess" was voted the lucky woman that got to kiss the pig. It was later reported that she stacked the deck to get her chance of making out with the pig. The pig who Barb now calls "studmuffin" seemed to like the kiss also. In front of app 5,000 people attending, Barb tongued the pig and at one point was licking the pig's nose rapidly and out of control.

Later that night she was caught sleeping with the pig. Confronted by the the local newspaper, Barb just said I wanted to be with him until he was loaded on the truck. During the 4-H sale Barb stole the pig from the owner, a seven year old girl. She entered the sale ring and cried like a baby while the pig was sold and led away.

Please send your sympathy cards to Barb as she is going through an emotional trauma at this time.

USC is picked to win Pac 10

USC is picked to win the Pac 10 for the fourth consecutive year. With the loss of Leinart, Bush and White, the writers still feel the talent level is there again. Nebraska faces them at USC this fall and it will be an interesting game. Is USC still that good. How much has NU improved. This writer thinks it will be a fun defensive type game with the home field being the difference. If NU's depth is adequate watch out!!

2006 NU football predicts! What are your thoughts on this?

The football season wil begin in 70 days. Yes, only 70 days. We are almost into July and then you know how quick the summer flies.

This writer is as confident as he has been since Frank Solich's last team. The schedule is tougher in 06 but so are the Huskers. They have a very solid defense with adequate depth at most all positions. The linebacker and defensive end corp is very solid. Corey McKeon and Adam Carriker lead the heart of these positions. Both are leaders of the team. Throw in Ruud, Octavien, and Bradley at linebacker and Barry Turner at defensive end and you have some of the Big 12's best. Steve Octavien, if he can stay healthy, may be as good as linebacker as we have had. Oh, and by the way, a star of the Bowl game, Lance Bradenburgh will provide even more depth.

At the cornerback positions, we have a potential high draft pick in Zach Bowman and the veteran Cortney Grixby.

Two positions of concern with depth is safety and the interior line. Suh and Dagunduro should provide a tough line with Cryer to either start or back them up. Zach Johnson and Craig Roarke will provide depth but need to come along a lot before the season begins. NU will need others to step to provide depth so that we can rotate and keep the players fresh. At safety we have Tierre Green and Andrew Shanle should be starters. Depth will be provided by Titus Brothers and rookie Anthony West. Safety and the interior linemen are two positions we don't need injuries.

On offense, it is essential that Zach Taylor stays healthy. This is a must for a very good season. He is as good as QB as there is in the Big 12. He will play in the NFL at some point. The backups have a long ways to go but continue to show improvement. They aren't ready for the Big 12 today.

One way to keep Taylor healthy is for the offensive line to step up a couple of notches. I believe they will do this in 06. Led by Kurt Mann and Matt Slausen, they will be improved. They are where we need them yet, but they have the potential to improved markedly. Chris Patrick, veteran Greg Austin, Mike Huff, Andy Christensen, and Lydon Murtha will all be challenging for starting jobs. The competition should be fierce which will make them all better.

The wide receiver unit is full of depth. We will easily be able to keep fresh receivers on the field at all times. Nate Swift and Terrance Nunn lead the pack. Maurice Purify will excel. Frantz Hardy will be back along with Chris Brooks. Todd Peterson had a great 2005 season and Isaiah Fluellen is back for one more year. There are no exceptional receivers such as Todd Blythe of ISU but will our depth you won't find a better group. We may have a different start at receiver each week.

Tight end is led by Matt Herian, Josh Mueller, and JB Phillips. Herian is still healing but should start to be a factor by the middle of the year. I like Mike McNiel, a 2006 recruit, to have some impact down the field. Missouri's Coffman and Rucker are tall and fast and caued NU a lot of problems last year. NU needs this kind of player and we should have good improvement at this position this year.

Running back is solid with Glenn and Marlon Lucky. They aren't all Big 12 right now but they are very good and could breakout this season. Leon Jackson is fast and will play in certain situations. I think Lucky and Jackson will catch quite a few passes in 06. Kenny Wilson the JUCO recruit is key. This writer feels he may be the most talented of the bunch if he can pick our system up fast enough. Look to him gaining carries per game by year end.

Jordon Congdon will excel again in 2006. The punter is yet to be determined. Should be interesting as to who can start. Dan Titchener is the favorite to win the job but Will Henery or the walkon from Texas could provide some interesting competition. Don't expect a Sam Koch or Kyle Larson to emerge right away.

    The season looks like this:

    09/02 Louisiana Tech

    NU will win easily 57-7.
    09/09 Nicholls State
Special teams play a big part of this game and some offensive records will be broken.
    72-3
    09/16 @ Southern Cal
Big game. USC will have a different QB. With our linebackers we will create some problems. USC is so talented. I look to two great teams fighting it out in a relatively low scoring game of 17-14. USC wins.
    09/23 Troy
Poor Troy will face the Huskers who will be angry after the USC loss. With the emotion of the USC game gone, NU will win 44-9. Taylor may break some season passing records by now.
    09/30 Kansas
This will be one of the revenge games the press talk about. The Kansas coaching staff is underrated. After last year's game which was the low point of the Callahan era, we will rebound in a tough one. 31-21.
    10/07 @ Iowa State
The "shootout". This will be the best game to date. Iowa State has the Meyer/Blythe connection against our secondary. This will be the game where the defense will have to work very hard. A mulitple overtime game with Iowa State winning 58-54.
    10/14 @ Kansas State
Josh Freeman watch out. Motivation does weird things. NU 38-17.
    10/21 Texas
Texas will be too tough at home. Very talented but with a new QB. I think Oklahoma is overrated and Texas will win the Big 12. Texas 30-21.
    10/28 @ Okla. State
Even though we are a little banged up after Texas look to NU winning 28-7.
    11/04 Missouri
Another revenge game. Brad Smith is gone and the backup has been in a little trouble. NU 38-14.
    11/11 @ Texas A&M
An away game against a solid team. NU 27-24.
    11/24 Colorado
This will be a fun game. Colorado has a new coach learning a new system. NU 45-21.
    12/02 Big 12 Champ.
Iowa State loses to two lesser teams and Texas beats NU in the Championship game 22-21.
    Nebraska 's record is 9-4.
Nebraska plays Iowa in the Alamo Bowl and wins 38-13.
    Season record 10-4

    Nebraska Football recruits

In reviewing "Rivals" recruiting DVD, it is obvious that Nebraska recruited some top notch players in 2006. See the "Rivals" link in my LINKS area for more information. This writer will attempt to predict the top five recruits that will have the most imediate impact for the Cornhuskers this fall.
    1. Kenny Wilson
A Juco player out of Kansas and a Liberal, Kansas native this guy is a physical speciman. He looks strong, fast and quick. As soon as he learns the plays and the Nebraska system he will be playing. He looks like a linebacker but is really fast. I think he will begin playing major time by mid-season. If he knew the system well, he would be a starter. I am high on Glenn, Lucky, Brandon Jackson and Leon Jackson. These guys are great and it will be a challenge to get them on the field as much as possible. I would guess that Lucky and Leon Jackson will line up as receivers during the year. Kenny Wilson looks like he belongs in the NFL now.

    2. Menelik Holt
Coming from St Augustine High School in San Diego, this kid could be in the rotation soon. He is very fast and can catch the ball from all routes. He will be used on the goal line with Todd Peterson and "Mo" will catch some TD's this year. He can jump and aoutwork the defender. Look for him to be a factor in Nebraska's success this fall.

    3. Maurice Purify
Another Juco player out of San Fransisco, California, Maurice Purify will make the rotation as a receiver in 2006. He scored 26 TD'slast year. He is tall and can catch a lot of passes over shorter defensive backs. He also is fast. He is another player NU will use at the goal line because of his height. Look to Purify to play in the NFL in a couple of years.

    4. Mike McNiel
This tight end from Missouri will be a true freshman this fall. He is tall and fast. He looks like Matt Herian when he first started at NU. He will add a dimension to the tight end position and will be more than a blocker. He can catch the call and run with it. He will play this fall and the staff will find a way to stretch out the defenses by using him. He may be comparable to Coffman and Rucker of the University of Missouri who Nebraska tried to recruit two years ago. He may at time line up as a receiver due to his ability.

    5. Anthony West
West will safety for NU this fall and will challenge Ricky Thenarse and Titus Brothers as one of the backups. The San Diego product may be the fastest kid on the football team. He could return punts also as he has a lot of quickness also. Because of his speed and the lack of depth at safety, I see Anthony West playing a lot this fall.

    Results from New Hampshire

Fout top drivers had "bad" days today. Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kurt Busch, Tony Stewart, and Ryan Newman all had their problems. This writer picked Jr., Busch and Newman in the top dozen. Tony Stewart was not picked to finish in the top 12.
    1. Matt Kenseth 14
    2. Jimmie Johnson 9
    3. Jeff Burton 7
    4. Dale Earnhardt Jr. 43
    5. Kurt Busch 38
    6. Greg Biffle 3
    7. Kyle Busch 1
    8. Ryan Newman 39
    9. Denny Hamlin 6
    10.Kevin Harvick 5
    11.Mark Martin 4
    12.Jeff Gordon 15

This writer picked Mayfield, Jarret, and Mears to have rough days. They finished 29,31 and 21st respectively.

Richmond is the best track to watch a race so far.

Out of all the race tracks you have been to, which one has the best track or atmosphere? Which track haven't you been to that you would like to?

This writer is fortunate to have been to Indy four times, Martinsville, Richmond, Kansas City and Phoenix.

Richmond is a great place to watch a race. Lots of excitement and it is easy to watch the action on the 3/4 mile track. Martinsville has a half mile track and is a lot of fun too. Indy has the best atmosphere and everybody needs to go there to see the best of them all. It is hard to watch the race though due to the 2 1/2 mile track.

I would like to go to Bristol. Just sounds great to ne there.

How does the Nascar winnings get split between owners, drivers and the rest of the team

    Question:
When the prize money is shown for the driver after a race, does the driver get all that money or does the owners get a part of it?

In my research, the driver's get it. However I didn't find anything to answer the question for sure. There is a complicated formula as how drivers get paid and lower placed drivers can get paid more depending on the sponsor.

    Friday, July 14, 2006

    Tough question!

Should Nextel Cup drivers be able to compete in the Busch Races?

Yes they should be allowed to compete in the Busch series. What is happening right now is that more Nextel Cup drivers are competing in the Busch series and it appears that if they got out, there wouldn't even be enough drivers for a complete field. I think long range that having too many Cup drivers in the Busch series is bad for Nascar. In the past the Busch series was a training ground for those that wanted to be in the Nextel Cup series. This year there are fewer drivers in Busch that the big teams are looking at to bring up. They are looking to drivers elsewhere such as Montoya from Formula One and Patrick from the open wheel division.

Why are so many Cup racers competing in Busch this year? Probably money but to be honest I am not sure. This writer loves watching the Cup racers in the Busch series but the series has to be a place to learn and hope for one of the big boys to pick them up. Whatever the reason is that the Cup racers are wanting to race in Busch needs to be looked at and changed.

Question is though "Shouldn't Danica Patrick run a full Busch Series if she goes to the Cup next year just for the experience?" The answer is yes and I hope to watch her more in Busch than the Cup series. Time will probably change the mix on its own.

    Reply to Danica Patrick question

Will Danica Patrick come to NASCAR and will she be able to compete with the big boys if she does?

Danica Patrick is very talented and is a very sellable commodity. She would create excitement and a topic of converstion that would create additional interest in Nascar. I think she would put a deal together with a Jack Rousch, Hendricks or any of the top teams she would make a move because that is where the big money is at. The fan base for Nascar is tremendous and still growing. Montoya is another example of a great driver moving to Nascar.

Would she compete for the championship right away. No. It would be quite an adjustment.I can't imagine that she could outrace Michael Waltrip and Robby Gordon and they are presently struggling to stay in or get in the top 25. She may have better equipment but I don't think in the first three years that she would be much better than 25th. She realistically would be in the 22-30 range in standings with great equipment.

But if she goes I will be watching how she does along with millions of other fans and that is good for the Nascar business.

    Answer to Michael Boehler question

1 What changes would you make to the existing points race as it is now?

This would take more thought and statistics than I have available. There is no doubt that the winner of a race should get bonus points of 20 to 25 points. This would create more exciting racing as some drivers tend to hold back to get their points vs going for the win. Many times those that led the most laps end up with as many points as the driver that won. It is possible for a driver to win the points race with no wins during the season. That isn't right. It would be better for the fans and fairer to the drivers if the winner of a race gets credit for being the best.

I also think there may be some merit in allowing any driver within 25 points of the top ten to have a chance at the championship also. I think these kind of things if not too complicated will allow more fans to feel like there is still a chance for their favorite driver if they are close. It would be win-win for the drivers and the fans.

    Top dozen at New Hampshire

Nascar takes us to New Hampshire this week. Here are this writer's top twelve predicted finishers:
    1. Matt Kenseth
    2. Jimmie Johnson
    3. Jeff Burton
    4. Dale Earnhardt Jr.
    5. Kurt Busch
    6. Greg Biffle
    7. Kyle Busch
    8. Ryan Newman
    9. Denny Hamlin
    10.Kevin Harvick
    11.Mark Martin
    12.Jeff Gordon

This writer doesn't feel good about the finishes of Jeremy Mayfield, Dale Jarrett or Casey Mears.

    Bobby Hamilton Jr.

    Question from Michael Boehler:
What happened to Bobby Hamilton Jr, and why isn't he racing this year. Also, how tall is he and has he been in a bad mood lately?

Bobby Hamilton Jr. is racing in the Craftsman Truck Series and has three top ten finishes in 2006. He is 13th in points. His father Bobby Hamilton won the Truck Series in 2004.

Bobby Jr. is 5'5" and weighs 170 lbs. One of the reasons of making a face when you asked for his autograph could be the constant demand of spectators asking for autographs, a tough 2005 Cup season, and the fact his father is fighting cancer.

    Nascar's All Star race

    Question From Brad Hartzog:
Do you think that the all-star race should be at the end of the season instead of the middle?

No. The All Star Race is usually the third week of May and it provides a high stakes race which is a nice break. There are no Nextel points. The excitement is greater in May vs what they would be in November. I think after the season the teams are ready for a break. In May, you put all the winners from the year before, plus past winners of the all star race, plus point champions from the past ten years and add an open race for one more driver to enter and you have some real excitement. The winner takes a million dollars. The fans have to like it better also because like the drivers they are ready for a short break after the points champion is named. Good question. Any comments?

    Fire a Question

Ask this writer a sports question and he will comment as to his views. The subject this week is Nascar. Fire away.

By the way, Matt Kenseth wrecked his rental on the way to the Indy track today. He was hit by a student driving in driver's ed. Then he went to the track and wrecked his car while testing at he brickyard. Matt Kenseth is having an eventful week.

    The Cinderella Man

Wasn't Paul Giamatti great in "The Cinderella Man". Great show with great acting. Did you know his father was the commissioner of Major League Baseball when Pete Rose was banned from baseball. Paul Giamatti will have a new movie out called "Lady in the Water."

This writer didn't get into the World Cup but many did. Hopefully the next time I can get educated better as to this event. It is followed globally.

T.J. Holloway is going to the Denver Broncos. He is a 3rd year pro from Nebraska and ended with 173 tackles as a linebacker.

Alex Gordon is batting .301, has 11 homeruns, 40 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases. The GM for KC says he will use Omaha now as the stop before Kansas City so it is apparent that will be Mr. Gordon's next stop. That will creat some excitement in Omaha.

This writer din't see Eric Crouch in any of the statistics for Toronto in the Canadian Football League.

Did Jeff Gordon intentionally put out Matt Kenseth in the Chicago race today? This accident affected some key racers namely Kenseth and Stewart. Please leave your comments!!

    Nascar results at Chicago

It was a crazy finish today with a lot of changes to a couple of top racers at the end.Kenseth was running 1st and Stewart 3rd. The actual finish is listed after the name.
    Predicted finish today is:
    1. Jimmie johnson (6th)
    2. Matt Kenseth (24)
    3. Tony Stewart (32)
    4. Greg Biffle (11)
    5. Kevin Harvick (4)
    6. Jamie McMurray (39)
    7. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (5)
    8. Jeff Burton (2)
    9. Mark Martin (18)
    10. Kyle Busch (3)
    11. Brian Vickers (13)
    12. Jeff Gordon (1)

Yeley ran well finishing 10th but Kahne did struggle with a 23rd place finish.

    Chicago Race/Nascar

Todays race should be a good one although these type tracks can sometime provide an uneventful race as to lead changes. The starting position for todays race isn't as important as it has been the past few weeks. The past winners have come from all over the board.

This writer sees Jimmie Johnson as the big favorite. He has been racing well and does well on the Chicago track. Matt Kenseth will be a factor and as always Tony Stewart will have a good car. Tony Stewart likes this track. Greg Biffle seems to be heating up and this could be his chance to knock one off. Watch for Jamie McMurray to have a very good finish today.

Kevin Harvick does well at this track. He has been a little inconsistent in his races lately, but today he will do well. One of the top five hottest racers right now is Jeff Burton and he looks to do well. Look to Mark Martin, Kyle Busch and the surprising Brian Vickers to be up towards the top today.

    Predicted finish today is:
    1. Jimmie johnson
    2. Matt Kenseth
    3. Tony Stewart
    4. Greg Biffle
    5. Kevin Harvick
    6. Jamie McMurray
    7. Dale Earnhardt Jr.
    8. Jeff Burton
    9. Mark Martin
    10. Kyle Busch
    11. Brian Vickers
    12. Jeff Gordon

I don't see Kasey Kayne and J.J. Yeley having goods days today.

    Race starts around 3. Enjoy.
